Duomo & Centro is the old core around Piazza del Duomo, where work on the cathedral began in 1386 and the last portal was inaugurated only on 6 January 1965.1 It is the largest church in Italy, and when mist hides the gilded Madonnina on its spire, Milanese take it as a sign the weather has turned.1 North of the square, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, built by Giuseppe Mengoni between 1865 and 1877, links the cathedral with the Teatro alla Scala.2

No other part of Milan has as many cafés, and they range from gilded salons to tabacchi with a short counter. The famous rooms are in and around the Galleria. The everyday ones line the side streets, chiefly Via Festa del Perdono, Via Dante, Via Larga and Via Pantano, where most people drink their espresso standing.

Local tip: Bar Mercurio on Via Dogana opens at 05:30, Monday to Saturday, before the cathedral square fills; on Sundays, Caffè De Amicis on Via Edmondo De Amicis opens at 08:00.

Getting around the Duomo and the Galleria

Duomo station, under the cathedral square, is the interchange between metro lines M1 and M3; the M1 platforms opened on 1 November 1964 and the M3 link on 1 May 1990.3 From there the center is walkable, and the Galleria, Italy's oldest shopping arcade still in use, is the covered route north to Piazza della Scala.2

In the octagon where the Galleria's two arms cross, visitors spin on one heel over the bull in Turin's coat of arms for luck. The habit wore a hole in the mosaic, which was repaired in 2017 and again in 2026.2

The cafés of the Galleria

Biffi started in 1852 as a bakery and café elsewhere in central Milan and moved into the Galleria when it was inaugurated on 15 September 1867. Panettone made its reputation, and in 1882 the café-restaurant became the first place in the city with electric light.4 Motta Milano 1928 is in the same arcade.

The Camparino is the other old name. Davide Campari, son of the bitter's creator Gaspare, opened it in 1915; its ground-floor bar di passo, a stand-up bar, keeps its Liberty (Art Nouveau) decoration and still serves Campari e seltz.5 Studio Lissoni Associati restored the bar before it reopened in autumn 2019.5

Early espresso and late bars in the center

Bar Mercurio on Via Dogana opens earliest, at 05:30 Monday to Saturday. Queen's Bar Tabacchi on Via Giosuè Carducci follows at 06:00, and Caffè Carducci on Via San Vittore at 06:30, closing on Sundays. Caffè De Amicis, at Via Edmondo De Amicis 61, does open on Sunday mornings, from 08:00.

For late hours, Vogue bar on Via Fernanda Wittgens stays open until 02:00 on Thursdays and Fridays and 03:00 on Saturdays. Actors' Studio Cafe on Via Terraggio serves until 01:00 on Fridays, and Seitaly on Corso Italia runs daily 07:30–00:00.

Pasticcerie, university bars and specialty coffee

Via Festa del Perdono has more cafés than any other street in the center, among them Fuel, a bakery with brunch, Ateneo Café, C'era una volta and Santo Stefano Café. Pasticceria Bastianello is at Via Borgogna 5, and Cova, which opened beside La Scala in 1817, has been at Via Montenapoleone 8 since 1950.6

For third-wave coffee, Nowhere – Coffee & Community on Via Caminadella charged €2 for an espresso and €2.50 for a cappuccino in April 2026.7 Café Kitsuné has outdoor tables on Piazza Cordusio, and Rabbit Hole Café on Via Giuseppe Mazzini opens daily, from 08:00 Monday to Saturday.
