In Milan the evening shift belongs to the aperitivo. Dinner seldom starts before 20:00 or 21:00, and a drink with something to eat fills the gap; unlike the Anglo-American happy hour, it is not built on discounts.1 In the 1990s, when Vinicio Valdo began pairing drinks with food, Milan became, in VICE’s words, the capital of the happy hour.1

Many cafés run both shifts from one counter. When Time Out reviewed oTTo on Via Paolo Sarpi in 2018, freelancers' laptops covered its wooden tables by day, and in the evening they gave way to glasses of wine and aperitifs.2 About two in five of the cafés open to at least 22:00 keep going until midnight or later.

Local tip: For coffee rather than a cocktail after 22:00, Caffè Panzera on Piazza Duca d'Aosta serves until 23:30 every day, and Dolci Storie on Via degli Imbriani until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Where these cafés are: Duomo & Centro (9), Porta Nuova & Centrale (8), Brera (7), Porta Venezia (7), Maciachini & the north (6), NoLo & Loreto (6), Città Studi & Lambrate (5), Porta Vittoria & XXII Marzo (4), Navigli & Ticinese (4), Paolo Sarpi & Chinatown (4), Isola (2), De Angeli & the west (2), Magenta & Sant’Ambrogio (2), Corvetto & the south (2), Tortona (2), Porta Romana (2).

Aperitivo, apericena and what to order

The apericena, an aperitivo filling enough to replace dinner, grew out of bars laying out tables of food for drinkers standing around them.1 In 2022 Valeria Bassetti of ShakHer declared the buffet aperitivo dead, saying bartenders were moving toward a dish matched to each drink.1

Some late cafés close in the afternoon and reopen for this hour. Bistrot 66 on Via Giulio Cesare Procaccini and Civico 39 Food & Drink on Via Giovanni Durando serve lunch, shut at 15:00 and open again at 18:00. Bar Skuisito on Via Giovanni Pacini reopens at 19:00 on weekdays, and Massaua on Via Alessandro Tadino at 19:00, Monday to Saturday.

Where to find a late café

The center has the widest choice: Duomo & Centro has the most late cafés, with Porta Nuova & Centrale, Brera and Porta Venezia close behind. In Brera, Art Cafe on Via Legnano stays open until midnight Monday to Saturday and Pandenus on Largo La Foppa until midnight every day.

Further out, Città Studi has Maramais on Via Antonio Grossich, open until 01:00 Monday to Saturday, and Le Cafe De Flore on Piazzale Paolo Gorini, 12:00–00:00 daily. In the north, Bausan Cafe on Piazza Bausan runs 06:30–23:00 every day, and Civico 39 stays open until 02:00 on Sundays. Onest, on Via Gerolamo Turroni in Porta Vittoria, serves until 23:30 from Wednesday to Sunday.

The latest closers

Memà on Largo Fra Paolo Bellintani is the last to shut, at 03:00 every night; Vogue bar on Via Fernanda Wittgens matches it on Saturdays. oTTo, ZOG near the Darsena, Nice Cafè on Via Roberto Lepetit and On the road on Viale Edoardo Jenner serve until 02:00 every day, and Mogamo on Viale Andrea Doria does from Monday to Saturday. Bar Baldassarre on Via Ruggero Boscovich closes at 01:30, daily.

Friday and Saturday stretch the hours further. Bistrot 66 stays open until 02:30 on both nights, and Bar dell’Angolo on Via Francesco Hayez until 01:00.

After midnight: takeaway rules and the last metro

Late drinks come with limits in the nightlife zones. Under the ordinances in force from 11 June to 2 November 2026, shops and vending machines stop selling alcohol at 22:00, and from midnight no bar or takeaway may sell alcoholic drinks to go.3 The zones include NoLo, Isola, Sarpi, Brera, Garibaldi, Ticinese and Darsena e Navigli.3

Plan the ride home before the last order. The metro runs until about 00:30, and the M5 line stops at midnight.4

FAQ

Open late in Milan: questions

Which cafés in Milan stay open latest at night?

Memà on Largo Fra Paolo Bellintani closes at 03:00. oTTo on Via Paolo Sarpi, ZOG near the Darsena, Nice Cafè on Via Roberto Lepetit and On the road on Viale Edoardo Jenner serve until 02:00 every day, and Bar Baldassarre on Via Ruggero Boscovich until 01:30.

Not in the nightlife zones after midnight. From 11 June to 2 November 2026, shops and vending machines in twelve zones, including NoLo, Isola, Sarpi, Brera and Darsena e Navigli, stop selling alcohol at 22:00, and from midnight no bar or takeaway business may sell alcoholic drinks to go.

How late does the Milan metro run after an aperitivo or a late café?

Metro lines M1, M2 and M3 run until about 00:30 and the M5 until midnight. Dinner in Milan seldom starts before 20:00 or 21:00, so the aperitivo usually falls in the early evening, well before the last train. In twelve nightlife zones, outdoor tables must be cleared by 01:00 on weeknights until 2 November 2026.
