Milano Centrale opened on 1 July 1931 to a design by Ulisse Stacchini, who had won the competition in 1912. By volume it is the largest railway station in Europe, and its roughly 120 million passengers a year make it second in Italy only to Roma Termini.1 Its forecourt, Piazza Duca d'Aosta, and Via Gustavo Fara have the most cafés in this part of the city, ahead of Via San Gregorio.
Gio Ponti's Pirelli Tower, 127 m and 32 floors, was finished in 1958 and stayed the tallest building in Italy until 1995.2 To the west, Porta Nuova is the business district Gerald D. Hines and partners began in 1997; César Pelli's UniCredit Tower rises 231 m with its spire.2 The earliest espresso is at the station itself, from 05:00.
Local tip: With an early train, Nuovo Bar Centrale by Cova on Piazza Duca d'Aosta and Bricco Cafè at Garibaldi both open at 05:00 every day; Caffè Panzera follows at 07:00.
