The Navigli are the two canals that reach Milan at the Darsena, the old dock by Porta Ticinese. Work on the Naviglio Grande began near Tornavento in 1177, and its boats later carried stone and marble for the cathedral.1 The Naviglio Pavese, finished in 1819 after a start in 1564, runs 33 km south to Pavia.2 The Darsena took its present shape in 1603, and the last barge of sand tied up there on 30 March 1979.3

Since then the canal banks have become a district of bars, restaurants and artists' studios.4 Coffee here is spread along Corso San Gottardo, the Ripa di Porta Ticinese, Via Carlo Torre and Viale Tibaldi, which have the most cafés, with more on Viale Coni Zugna, Via Vigevano and the Alzaia Naviglio Pavese.

Local tip: On antiques-market Sundays the Alzaia Naviglio Grande is busy from 08:30, so have breakfast first at Good Morning Cafè on Viale Coni Zugna, which opens daily at 07:30.5
