Kitano-chō (北野町) is the hillside north of Sannomiya where foreign residents built their houses, the ijinkan (異人館, foreigners' houses). A building boom from the late 1880s to the early 1910s left more than 100 Western buildings, of which 33 survived in 2007, and about 9.3 ha around Kitano-chō and Yamamoto-dōri is a national preservation district for traditional buildings.1
The best known is the Weathercock House (風見鶏の館), the home of the German trader Gottfried Thomas, designed by Georg de Lalande and probably completed in 1904. It became an Important Cultural Property in 1978 and reopened on 18 July 2025 after closing in October 2023 for earthquake strengthening.2 Kazamidori, the NHK morning drama that began in October 1977, set off the district's ijinkan boom.3
Local tip: Pair Kitano with Nunobiki: Mendaki, the lower fall, is only 8–10 minutes on foot from the shinkansen platforms at Shin-Kobe.9

Freundlieb in the Union Church
The drama's heroine marries a German baker modeled on Heinrich Freundlieb,3 and his family's bakery now occupies the former Kobe Union Church at Ikuta-chō 4-6-15. William Merrell Vories designed the Gothic church, completed in 1929; it was used for worship until 1992, damaged in the 1995 earthquake and bought by the Ueharas of Freundlieb, whose own premises the quake had hit.4
The 1999 renovation kept the arches and openings, hid the new earthquake walls at the back of the shop, put the bakery in the old ground-floor dining hall and turned the second-floor chapel into the restaurant.4
Nishimura on Kitano-zaka
Kitano-zaka Nishimura Coffee at Yamamoto-dōri 2-1-20 opened in 1974 as a members-only kissaten in the ground floor of the founder's house, furnished with imported pieces and furniture he carved himself. It opened to the public after the 1995 earthquake, and in summer it still serves iced coffee in a hollowed-out block of ice from its members' days. Members once included the actress Yamada Isuzu, the novelist Tanabe Seiko and the Kobe-born film critic Yodogawa Nagaharu.3
In 2023 the six-bean blend cost ¥950 and a cake set ¥1,450, and the first-floor café was open 10:00–22:00.5
Coffee in the foreign houses
The Moore House at Kitano-chō 2-9-3, a white wooden two-story house built in 1898, runs a tea room 11:00–17:00, closed Tuesdays, serving a strawberry millefeuille made to a recipe from Maxim's in Ginza.6 Pan to Espresso to Ijinkan bakes in the former Disrefsen house at Yamamoto-dōri 3-5-19, with café and bakery open 08:00–18:00.7
Coffee Kitano Jūbankan at Kitano-chō 3-5-9 roasts over charcoal and grinds to order, 11:00–18:00.8 La Terrasse Kitano at 3-7-1 and Art Salon Gigi at 3-5-16 are on the same streets.
Up to Shin-Kobe and Nunobiki falls
Nunobiki falls begin behind Shin-Kobe Station: from the JR shinkansen station it is an 8–10 minute walk to Mendaki (19 m) and about 8 minutes more to Odaki, the 43 m main fall.9
Ontaki Chaya (おんたき茶屋), a teahouse overlooking Odaki, has traded since 1915, and records show a teahouse on the site in 1833. It serves oden, yudōfu and Nunobiki ramen, and a set meal on telephone reservation.10
