Sannomiya (三宮) is named after Sannomiya Shrine, one of eight shrines affiliated with Ikuta Shrine, and the name became official in 1878. It is the busiest rail hub in Kobe and Hyōgo Prefecture: JR Sannomiya, the Hankyu and Hanshin lines' Kobe-Sannomiya, the city subway and the Port Liner to Port Island all meet here.1

The district became the city's downtown after World War II. The Sannomiya Center Gai arcade opened in autumn 1946 and Kobe City Hall moved here in 1957.1 Kissaten (喫茶店, traditional coffee shops) hold on in upper floors and side streets: Eikokuya in Center Gai 3-chōme, Hagiwara Coffee at Sannomiya-chō 1-10-1, and Java and Motomachi Kissa on Kitanagasa-dōri.

Local tip: Akaneya's 60th-anniversary Ōkura Tōen cup, sold with a coffee for ¥11,000 in 2026, was limited to 100 pieces; ask at the counter whether any are left.2

The beans come from Hagiwara Coffee, founded in 1928, and are ground to order and dripped by hand. In May 2026 the house blend and each single origin cost ¥900, sweets came only as a set with a drink, and classical records played from 12:00 to the 21:30 last order.2

Siphons and Shōwa rooms

Kobe-tei (神戸亭) in Sannomiya-chō 1-chōme is a classic jun-kissa (純喫茶, a "pure" coffee house without alcohol): brick-style walls, carpet, a large table with flowers under a chandelier, a counter lined with siphons and wooden ashtrays with a horseshoe motif.3 It opens 09:50–19:30 daily and takes cash only.

Motomachi Kissa, at Kitanagasa-dōri 3-9-7, opened in 2009 in a building about 50 years old, taking over the previous shop's fittings.4 It serves coffee in cups and saucers from the 1950s and 1960s; in 2023 a Brazil cost ¥580 and the homemade custard pudding ¥280, ordered only with a drink.5
