Nada Ward (灘区) climbs from the harbor to the foot of Mount Rokkō, served by JR Rokkōmichi and Hankyu Rokkō stations. Kobe University's Rokkōdai campuses sit above them, home to its law, economics, letters, science and engineering faculties; city buses run up from Hankyu Rokkō, JR Rokkōmichi and Hanshin Mikage, and the walk from Hankyu Rokkō takes 15–25 minutes.1
Suidōsuji (水道筋), the ward's shopping district, runs about 1 km east from Hankyu Ōji-kōen Station through four markets and eight shopping streets, with about 450 member shops. The name means "water main road": pipe-laying began around 1910, and after a 1918 city council resolution a road was built over the pipes. Kobe Steel's works at Wakinohama and Kwansei Gakuin, which stood on the site of today's Ōji Park until 1929, may have helped draw the crowds that filled its markets.2
Local tip: Be on Suidōsuji's Erunado arcade at 19:00, when the shop signs play their five-minute LED show, set to a song residents made in 2007.4

Hagiwara's roastery on Jōnai-dōri
Hagiwara Coffee (萩原珈琲) has its head office on Jōnai-dōri 1-chōme, south of Hankyu Ōji-kōen and close to Suidōsuji. It began in 1928 as Hagiwara Shōten, a grain wholesaler in the Wada market north of JR Nada Station, and started roasting over charcoal in 1950.3
The idea came from its sugar trade with bakeries: staff remembered how well bread from wood-fired ovens turned out. In 2018 it delivered to about 600 cafés and restaurants, some 40 of them in Nada, roasted on Port Island and ran Coffee Studio, a shop on the ground floor of the head office that mixes blends to order.3
Charcoal heats the beans evenly through, and the company says the coffee turns less bitter and sour as it cools; the hard part is consistency, managed by choosing the charcoal and adjusting the drum's air valves.3
Kissaten along Suidōsuji
Kissa Donie (喫茶ドニエ) at Suidōsuji 5-3-3 takes its name from the Russian title of Gorky's play The Lower Depths.4 Cafe Ango (水出しコーヒー あんご), just north of the shopping street at Suidōsuji 4-3-16, makes cold-drip coffee at about one drop per second; the owner says slow cold extraction draws out the coffee fully and leaves a clean finish.5
Shirokane Coffee and La Tour share Suidōsuji 5-2-1, Café du Gion is at 3-4, and Hagiwara's own Coffee Studio is close by on Jōnai-dōri.
Rokkōmichi's cup collections
Kōhīkan Shinshū Azumino (珈琲館 信州安曇乃) in Morigo-chō 1-chōme serves coffee in Meissen's Dragon pattern. Only one cup survived the 1995 earthquake, and the café started again from it; the owner calls his cups important staff.6
Cafe Wagamachi (CAFEわが町) in Fukada-chō, whose owners stayed in Rokkōmichi after the quake, is furnished with Victorian English antiques, down to a cabinet used as the counter.7
Roasters and early openers
Rokkōmichi also has newer roasters: Coffee Roast and Lagom Coffee Roastery on Sakuraguchi-chō, Kaffee Fika's Rokkō shop in Morigo-chō, Midori no Mame (緑の豆) on Fukuzumi-dōri, and a little further east, over the ward line, Forest Coffee Roasters is in Mikage-yamate.
Kissa Ōishi on Funadera-dōri opens at 06:00 every day, and Coffee Eruta on Harada-dōri at 07:00 on weekdays except Tuesday.
