Amman began on seven hills and now spreads over 19, which the city groups into 22 areas named for their jabal (hill) or wadi (valley).1 Its café history starts at the bottom, in the valley of Al-Balad about 700 m above sea level, where Balat al-Rasheed (بلاط الرشيد) opened on King Faisal Street in 1924 and is usually called the oldest café in the city.23 Through the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s its hall was a forum where Amman's notables argued over the politics of the day.3
West Amman is the modern half and the city's economic center.1 Specialty coffee arrived there late: a 2019 guide credited younger Jordanians who had drunk it abroad, and pointed to The Coffee Room, opened on Paris Square in 2016, and Melange in Abdoun, open since 2017.4 Local chains grew alongside; Qahwa BLK alone had more than 20 branches across Jordan by 2025.5
About five million people live in Amman as of 2026.1 Many of them use cafés as study rooms and offices, and university students, freelancers and remote workers settle in with laptops for the afternoon.6
Amman's districts take their names from the hill or valley they sit on, and directions run by the numbered circles of Zahran Street, which holds seven of the city's eight.115 The oldest cafés are down in Al-Balad and up the stairs in Weibdeh and Jabal Amman; the newer ones spread west, from Abdoun to Mecca Street.

Al-Balad's valley: King Faisal Street, the Roman Theatre and the Kalha stairs.

Listen to how people say qahwa (coffee). In Amman the q is a hard g among men, gahwa, and a glottal stop among women, ahwe, which is why café signs mix the two: Ahwet Ayoush in Abdoun, T-Gah-Wa in Sweifieh.7 Specialty bars and chains print their menus in English, and at Qahwa BLK the best sellers are iced Spanish and hazelnut lattes.5
Argileh (the water pipe) belongs to café life here. When the municipality moved in 2014 to enforce the 2008 Public Health Law, its officials counted 381 argileh cafés in Amman, and the restaurant association put the figure nearer 1,000.8 Many newer cafés keep smoke-free sections, so ask for one if smoke bothers you.6
Mid-range and upscale places often add a 10% service charge; where the bill has none, JD 0.50–1 is a usual tip at a casual café.9 The working week runs Sunday to Thursday and the weekend is Friday and Saturday, and some cafés open later on Fridays.10
Laptops are an ordinary sight, and the etiquette is simple: keep calls quiet, check for a socket before you settle, and don't hold a big table for hours.11 Some cafés give out Wi-Fi codes that expire after a set time instead of one fixed password; in 2019 Rumi in Weibdeh and Turtle Green Tea near Rainbow Street both did.12
