Amman lies 700 to 1,100 m above sea level, and its western and northern neighborhoods have a hot-summer Mediterranean climate.1 Highs in July and August average about 31–33 °C, rain falls mainly from November to April, and the higher west gets snow once or twice a year, which makes spring and autumn the easiest seasons for a terrace.1

Outdoor tables are spread evenly across the city: Jabal Amman has the most of them, just ahead of Abdoun and Jabal al-Weibdeh. On Rainbow Street the crowds come out in summer, after sunset.2

Local tip: Bring a layer for an evening terrace between November and April: January nights in West Amman average 2.8 °C.1

The best-known balcony on the hill belongs to Wild Jordan, the nature reserves' ecotourism center, whose café has one of the finest views in Amman; on Fridays it hosts Souq al Shams, an organic farmers' market.6 Souk Jara, the summer street market near Rainbow Street, runs every Friday as well.7

Winter nights and summer days

Winter is colder than many visitors expect. January nights average 2.8 °C in West Amman and 4.2 °C in the east, the record low in East Amman is −4.5 °C, and fog settles on about 120 days a year.1 The west is also wetter, with more than 500 mm of rain a year against less than 250 mm in the east.1

Summers are moderately long, with mild heat and cooling breezes.1 Rainbow Street draws large evening crowds in summer, and the traffic has pushed some of its residents to move away.2
