Amman keeps late café hours. A 2019 guide described the city's coffee before specialty arrived as roadside coffee stalls and late-night cafés, and a 2025 essay counts long opening hours among the reasons cafés became the city's informal social hubs.12

The latest tables are in the west. The Study House on Mecca Street and كورنر كڤي on Thaqafa Street in Shmeisani never close, and Zaid Melkawi near Mecca Street pours until 03:00. Abdoun, Um Uthaina & Rabieh and Mecca Street share the most late openers between them.

Local tip: Check the day before a late night out: Zaid Melkawi, open until 03:00, closes on Fridays, and Manara in Weibdeh on Sundays.

Where these cafés are: Um Uthaina & Rabieh (2), Abdoun & Deir Ghbar (2), Mecca Street & Um al-Summaq (2), Jabal Amman & Rainbow Street (1), Sweifieh (1), Shmeisani (1), Jabal al-Weibdeh (1).

Open all night on Mecca Street and in Shmeisani

The Study House at No. 261 Mecca Street is open 24 hours, with Wi-Fi, outdoor tables and card payment, and it serves the early crowd as well as the late one. كورنر كڤي, the other all-night address, is on Thaqafa Street in Shmeisani.

Thaqafa Street, or Cultural Avenue, is a 360 m street in the heart of the banking district, rebuilt by the city around a pedestrian island about 15 m wide with a gallery, an outdoor theater and gardens.3 By 2011 the island belonged mostly to skaters and young men circling it in cars, and the kiosks meant for books had turned into shops for sweets and drinks.3

Until 03:00, and the midnight closers

Zaid Melkawi on Ahmad al-Thaher Street opens at 22:00 and serves until 03:00 every night except Friday. Barista at No. 16 Kabul Street in Rabieh (from 09:00), Shams el Balad at No. 69 Mu'ath bin Jabal Street in Jabal Amman (from 10:00) and Būn Fellows Abdoun on Irbid Street (from 07:30) all serve until 00:00.

An hour earlier, K Coffee House on Shatt al-Arab Street in Um Uthaina, Ahwet Ayoush on Queen Zein al-Sharaf Street in Abdoun and منارة (Manara) in Jabal al-Weibdeh close at 23:00. ستوريا (Storia) on Sae'd Al-Moftee Street in Sweifieh stops at 22:00.

Argileh and smoke-free nights

Argileh (the water pipe) is a big business in Amman's cafés. In 2014, when the municipality said it would stop issuing and renewing argileh licences to enforce the 2008 Public Health Law, the restaurant association warned that a ban would cost jobs and put what argileh brought the state at about US$56.5 million a year in taxes and fees.4

If you want clean air late, Shams el Balad in Jabal Amman is smoke-free and serves until 00:00, and Būn Fellows in Abdoun has outdoor tables until the same hour.

Fridays, weekends and the evening rush

Jordan's weekend is Friday and Saturday, with a Sunday-to-Thursday working week.5 Late hours bend around it: Zaid Melkawi takes Fridays off, Manara closes on Sundays, and Storia opens only at 14:00 on Fridays, though it still closes at 22:00.

Evenings are also when traffic peaks in the old west. On a weekend night, a car can need half an hour to cover a few hundred meters of Rainbow Street, so walk to Shams el Balad from the 1st Circle rather than drive.6 For the trip home from Mecca Street or Rabieh, taxis and servees (shared taxis) work main roads such as Al-Madina Al-Munawara Street.7
