De Pijp was built in the late 19th century on former polder land south of the canal ring, under an 1876 plan by Jan Kalff that left construction to private investors.12 Nobody is sure where the nickname, "the Pipe", comes from: an 1892 newspaper compared the commuters pouring out of its side streets to long pipes, and another theory points to a long, straight polder ditch. About 35,600 people lived here in 2024.1

Most streets are named after Dutch painters, from Jan Steen and Frans Hals to Ferdinand Bol.2 The Albert Cuyp market runs through the middle, Sarphatipark lies a few blocks south of it, and the coffee bars cluster on Van Woustraat, Eerste Van der Helststraat, Albert Cuypstraat and Ferdinand Bolstraat.

Local tip: Start at De Markt (Albert Cuypstraat 122B), which opens at 06:30 Monday to Saturday, walk the market toward Van Woustraat, then cut a few blocks south to Sarphatipark for a second cup at Nook.

The Albert Cuyp market

In 1905 the city set up a market on Albert Cuypstraat, at first only on Saturday evenings; since 1912 it has run in the daytime, six days a week.3 It stretches between Ferdinand Bolstraat and Van Woustraat, has about 260 stalls and draws some six million visits a year, with tourists accounting for about a third of its turnover.4 Stroopwafels (syrup waffles) are made fresh at the stalls.3

Marie Heinekenplein, at the top of Ferdinand Bolstraat, stands where much of the old Heineken brewery was, and it is ringed with cafés, as is Gerard Douplein.1 The original 1867 brewery building on Stadhouderskade stopped brewing in 1988 and reopened as a visitor center in 1991, now called the Heineken Experience.5

Coffee around Sarphatipark

Sarphatipark, about 4.5 hectares, was laid out from 1885 in the English landscape style by city engineer Van Niftrik. It was named in 1888 after Samuel Sarphati, the physician and city planner who proposed it, and his bust has stood on an artificial mound in the park since 1886.6

Two cafés face the park. Nook, at Sarphatipark 24H, is spread over three floors, with communal seating and room to work at the top, the coffee bar on the ground floor and a wine shop in the basement.7 Scandinavian Embassy, at number 34, pairs homemade pastries with coffee from specialty roasters in Scandinavia.8
