Amsterdam-Oost lies across the Amstel from the center.1 It became a single borough in 2010 and had almost 123,000 inhabitants in 2013; its neighborhoods include the Oosterparkbuurt, the Dapperbuurt, the Indische Buurt, Watergraafsmeer, which the city annexed in 1921, and the Science Park.2

Oost was mostly polder farmland until the 19th century. Industry brought newcomers from the Dutch provinces, the Caribbean and Suriname, and later from Turkey and Morocco, and Surinamese and Indonesian tokos (shops) still line its streets.1 Coffee comes from Turkish bakeries as well as from specialty bars that roast their own beans.13

Local tip: Pair the Dappermarkt (Monday to Saturday, 09:00–17:00) with a €1 espresso at Kaffee on Dapperplein, open Monday to Saturday from 09:00.56
