Oud-West grew in the 19th century along two roads out of the city, the Overtoom and the Kinkerstraat, and is bounded by the Singelgracht, the Vondelpark and the Kostverlorenvaart. As a borough it had about 31,700 residents on 1.7 square kilometers.1 The Overtoom is named after a wooden slipway built in 1515, where teams of 16 to 24 men hauled small boats between waters at different levels.2
In the 1980s the district was a center of Amsterdam's squatting movement; two former squats, OT301 and OCCII, are now cultural venues.3 Today it is the roasters' quarter: Monks, LOT61, Dak and CoffeeRoastery DaCosta all have cafés here, a short walk from one another.
Local tip: Pair coffee with the Ten Katemarkt: Toko Kopi Tuku at Tollensstraat 57Y opens at 09:00 (closed Tuesdays), and the market stalls are right outside along De Hallen.3

De Hallen was built in 1902–1905 as the Tollensstraat tram depot and served the city transport company until 1996. After a transport museum left in 2005, it stood empty for seven years. The rebuilt complex opened in stages from 5 April 2014, with a passage, the Hannie Dankbaarpassage, linking a cinema, a public library branch, a hotel and the FoodHallen.4
Belcampo, the library's reading café, is on the passage, and Toko Kopi Tuku has its counter at Tollensstraat 57Y. The Kanarie Club fills another part of the old depot and has power outlets throughout for anyone working over a coffee.5
Monks Coffee Roasters roasts on a 12-kilo Probat in the port area on Westhavenweg and pours its coffee at Bilderdijkstraat 46, open daily 08:00–17:00.6 LOT61, at Kinkerstraat 112, was started by two Australians who came to Amsterdam by way of some of New York's best-known coffee bars.7 Five Ways, a few blocks further at Kinkerstraat 186, has served coffee since 2017.7
Trakteren, at Jan Pieter Heijestraat 119A, pours a different single-origin coffee each month, roasted by Dutch Barista Coffee.8 CoffeeRoastery DaCosta is on De Clercqstraat, open from 08:00 on weekdays, and Dak runs a showroom café at Bellamyplein 16 with the same hours.
The Overtoom runs about 1.75 kilometers from the Stadhouderskade to the Amstelveenseweg, along the edge of the Vondelpark. Tram 1 covers its full length; the line began as a horse tram in 1877 and was electrified in 1904.2
The Overtoom and Bilderdijkstraat have the most cafés in Oud-West; on the Overtoom they run from &Japonism at number 255 (Wednesday to Sunday) to Toasty! at 437. Fika on Bellamystraat opens earliest, at 07:00 Monday to Saturday, with Fred's Koffie on Tollensstraat and Ikaria Food on Bilderdijkstraat from 07:30 on weekdays. The open-air Ten Katemarkt runs along De Hallen on Ten Katestraat.34
Maracuyá, on Jan Pieter Heijestraat, is an all-day coffee and lunch café named after the Spanish word for passion fruit, with a mostly vegetarian menu.5 Karavaan on Kwakersplein is known for its big terrace and serves from 09:00 until 01:00, or 03:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.5
Café de Vos on Bilderdijkstraat keeps the same late hours from Wednesday to Sunday, and Bosco on Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat serves daily from 08:00 to 22:00.
