HappyCow, the plant-based restaurant guide, ranked Amsterdam eighth among vegan-friendly cities in 2025, with 73 vegan venues and 1,145 reviews, behind London, Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, Tokyo, New York City and Kyoto.1 The city held the same place in 2022, when HappyCow counted 78% growth in its vegan businesses over three years and pointed to the Vegan Junk Food Bar chain.2
City hall pushes the same way. Amsterdam's action plan for the protein transition aims for a diet in which 60% of protein is plant-based by 2030, and since late 2020 the municipality's own catering has offered 80% vegetarian food.3 On menus, vegan means no animal products at all, while vegetarisch (vegetarian) can still include milk, eggs and cheese.
Local tip: For vegan options after dinner, go to Mads on Zoutkeetsplein (daily until 22:00) or Pakhuis de Zwijger, open until 23:00 on weekdays; most other cafés with vegan menus close by 18:00.

Milk drinks drive the change. NOS reported in 2020 that milk-based coffees, mainly cappuccino, made up almost 30% of the coffee drunk outside the home and had grown 8% in a year, with soy and oat milk increasingly popular.4 Ask for havermelk (oat milk) or sojamelk (soy milk).
Oud-West has the most cafés with vegan options, ahead of Oud-Zuid, with the Jordaan and the canal ring next. On the Overtoom, Toasty! at number 437 opens at 08:00 on weekdays, and on Jan Pieter Heijestraat, Rosti at number 88 and Trakteren at 119A are on the same stretch.
taal.coffee on J.J. Cremerplein starts at 08:00 on weekdays and 08:30 at weekends. MARGO'S has a branch at Bellamyplein 18 and another, Margo's, on Eerste Tuindwarsstraat in the Jordaan, and Café COOS on the Bilderdijkkade serves daily from 11:00 to 19:00.

Not every stop is a coffee bar. On the Haarlemmerdijk, Nomu at number 96 and Tea Stories at 122 serve bubble tea with vegan options, and Moychay on the Rozengracht stays open until 20:00 on most days.
East and north of the center the choice thins out but doesn't vanish.
