The Jordaan was laid out from 1612 as Het Nieuwe Werck (The New Work), between the Prinsengracht, the Brouwersgracht, the Leidsegracht and the Singelgracht. The most common explanation of its name is the French jardin (garden), since many of its streets and canals are named after trees and flowers. It was a working-class district, and the February strike of 1941 began with meetings on the Noordermarkt.1

The filled-in Rozengracht is the main road through it.1 The canal was filled in 1890; trams 13 and 17 have been the only lines on it since July 2018, and Rembrandt lived on the street from 1656 until his death in 1669.2 The coffee is spread across small streets rather than one strip, with the Prinsengracht, Westerstraat and Lindengracht each holding a few cafés.

Local tip: Winkel 43 opens at 07:00 on Mondays and Saturdays, the two market days: go early for a slice of appeltaart before the market queue builds.45

Brown cafés and the Westerkerk

Café Chris at Bloemstraat 42 opened as a beer house in 1624, which makes it the oldest café in the Jordaan; builders working on the nearby Westertoren are said to have collected their pay there.6 The Westerkerk was built from 1620 to 1631, and its 87-meter tower is the tallest church tower in the city. Rembrandt was buried in the church on 8 October 1669, in a grave whose exact location is unknown.7

Café 't Smalle on Egelantiersgracht occupies the premises where Pieter Hoppe opened his liqueur distillery around 1780, and its waterside terrace fills on sunny days.6 For coffee into the night, Het Monumentje at Westerstraat 120 opens at 08:30 on weekdays and closes at 01:00, or 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and Café Kalkhoven serves until midnight from Tuesday to Sunday.

Espresso bars on the side streets

The earliest starts are in the northern Jordaan: Bruno's coffee and tea on Tweede Goudsbloemdwarsstraat opens at 07:30 from Tuesday to Saturday, and Moods coffee corner on Lindengracht at 08:00 on weekdays. NU koffie & delicatessen on Tweede Egelantiersdwarsstraat also opens at 08:00 on weekdays, and Kafenion on Bloemgracht stays open until 19:00 on weekdays.

A Sense of Place, on Willemsstraat, is a coffee and wine bar in a former garage, run by Lucas Hernandez from Barcelona. It pairs its coffee with seasonal toasts and doubles as a listening bar, with resident selectors playing vinyl.8 It opens from Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00.
