In the 17th century Amsterdam became Europe's main port for the tea and coffee trade, built on the Dutch East India Company's often brutal colonial networks in Asia.1 Coffee from Java was also grown in the city, in a hothouse at the Hortus Botanicus. By the most often told account, a plant went from Amsterdam to Louis XIV of France in 1714, and its descendants spread to the French Caribbean colonies and eventually to Brazil.2

Some of the old rooms are still pouring. Café Hoppe has stood on the Spui since 1670 and opens at 09:00 every day.3 Brown cafés (bruin cafés) are the traditional Dutch pubs, and the grand café is their formal cousin: Café Americain on Leidseplein, from 1902, is the oldest grand café in the Netherlands, with Art Nouveau leaded glass and a reading table stocked with newspapers.41

Specialty roasting arrived early here. EspressoFabriek, founded in 2005, was one of the first companies in Amsterdam to roast its own beans in-house, and its café in Westerpark is still one of its three addresses.5 Roasters now run their own cafés across the city, with the densest cluster in Oud-West, between Kinkerstraat and the Overtoom.

How coffee works in Amsterdam

Don't ask a local for a coffeeshop. The Dutch word once meant a koffiehuis (coffee house), but in the Netherlands it now refers only to a shop that sells soft drugs; an espresso is served at a koffiebar (coffee bar), a café or a grand café.6 Amsterdam's coffeeshops display a green-and-white permit with a shop number in the window.7 Since 2023 smoking cannabis in public has been banned in the Red Light District, on the Nieuwmarkt and around the Dam, and most bars don't allow it indoors either.8

Koffie verkeerd ("wrong coffee") is what the Dutch call a milky latte.9 At Café De Groene Vlinder by the Albert Cuyp market it cost €3.60 on the October 2026 menu, the same as a cappuccino.18 Appeltaart (apple pie) tops the dessert list at most cafés and comes warm, with a heap of slagroom (whipped cream).1011 At Winkel 43 on the Noordermarkt, a slice cost €5.30 in 2026, with the cream €1 extra.12

Plant-based milk costs extra: Café De Bazel on Vijzelstraat listed an organic espresso at €3.30 and a cappuccino at €3.80 in October 2026, plus €0.70 for soy or oat milk.13 Concerto Koffie, inside the Concerto record store on Utrechtsestraat, offers free Wi-Fi and invites you to bring a laptop.14 LOT61's café at Centraal Station has corner seats with outlets, and the city's 25 public library branches, the OBA, have workspaces visitors can use.15

Tipping is voluntary, and leaving nothing for a single coffee is not considered rude. Card terminals that suggest a tip are a recent irritation: a hospitality expert quoted by the consumer program Kassa in May 2025 said that asking customers for a tip is wrong in principle. Card tips are usually pooled and shared among staff, dishwashers included, by hours worked.16

FAQ

Cafés in Amsterdam: common questions

Is a coffeeshop in Amsterdam a place to drink coffee?

No. In Amsterdam a coffeeshop sells soft drugs, not coffee. The word once meant a coffee house, but in the Netherlands it no longer does, and coffeeshops display a green-and-white permit with a shop number in the window. For an espresso or a cappuccino, look for a koffiebar, a café or a grand café. Smoking cannabis in public is banned in the Red Light District, on the Nieuwmarkt and around the Dam.

What does a coffee cost in Amsterdam?

It depends on where you sit. Kaffee on Dapperplein in Oost was charging €1 for an espresso in 2026. In October 2026 an espresso cost €3.10 at Café De Groene Vlinder and €3.30 at Café De Bazel, and a cappuccino €3.60 to €3.80, with soy or oat milk €0.70 extra at De Bazel. A slice of appeltaart cost €5.30 at Winkel 43 in 2026, and €6.50 with whipped cream at Café Vertigo in the Vondelpark in 2025.

Which neighborhood of Amsterdam has the most cafés?

Grachtengordel and Oud-Zuid have the most cafés, followed by Oost. The canal ring is the 17th-century core; Oud-West and De Pijp are the 19th-century districts just beyond it, built around the Kinkerstraat and the Albert Cuyp market.

Do you tip in Amsterdam cafés?

Tipping in Amsterdam cafés is voluntary, and leaving nothing for a single coffee is not considered rude. A hospitality expert quoted by the consumer program Kassa in 2025 said that asking customers for a tip is wrong in principle. When you do tip by card, the money is usually pooled and shared among the staff, dishwashers included, according to the hours each person worked.

Which Amsterdam cafés are good for working on a laptop?

Concerto Koffie on Utrechtsestraat offers free Wi-Fi and invites guests to bring a laptop. LOT61's café at Centraal Station has corner seats with power outlets. For a free alternative, Amsterdam's 25 public library branches, the OBA, have workspaces that visitors can use without a membership.
