Free Wi-Fi is easy to find in Amsterdam's coffee bars; a table for the whole afternoon is not. DutchNews reported in 2023 that "no laptops" and "no laptops on the weekends" signs had become increasingly common in Dutch cafés, and that some owners had unplugged the router or stopped giving out the password.1
The objection is economic: owners say laptop users hold a table for hours after ordering one coffee or the cheapest thing on the menu.1 Other customers mind less than owners do. In a 2016 poll by the consumer program Radar, 61% of more than 600 respondents said people working on laptops in a coffee bar didn't bother them, and 38% said they did.2
Local tip: At weekends, ask before opening a laptop in a small coffee bar, where weekend bans are common; the OBA Oosterdok, open 10:00–20:00 on Saturdays and Sundays, has more than 1,000 seats.15

The canal ring has the most cafés with Wi-Fi, ahead of Oud-West, with Oost and De Wallen & Nieuwmarkt next. In the ring, The School of Life on Frederiksplein opens at 08:00 on weekdays and 10:00 at weekends, Screaming Beans has Wi-Fi at both its Runstraat and Utrechtsestraat bars, and MINA on Weteringschans closes on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Near the Dam, Sango on the Stromarkt serves from 08:30 Monday to Saturday, and Bistro Berlage on Beursplein stays open until 21:00 every day. The Stroopist on Warmoesstraat keeps going until 22:00 every day, and in Oud-West, Coffee Room at Kinkerstraat 110 stays open until 19:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.
I amsterdam's October 2026 list of laptop-friendly places is specific about what each offers. LOT61 at Amsterdam Centraal runs on the Hilton hotel's network and has outlets in its nooks, and Benji's Toko has reliable Wi-Fi at three addresses, including Baarsjesweg 188 in De Baarsjes, with outlets in its outdoor space.3
In Noord, The Coffee Virus at Overhoeksplein 2 is open to the public, with power outlets and good Wi-Fi. Bar Bistro Bureau, on the fifth floor of B.Amsterdam in Nieuw-West, lets anyone use its tables free of charge on working days, and the café at De Balie has a mezzanine looking out over Leidseplein.3
Most cafés with Wi-Fi close by 18:00, so evening work means heading away from the canals. CREA café at Nieuwe Achtergracht 170 stays open until midnight from Monday to Saturday, KANIS on the Levantkade until 23:00 most days, and Subcult on Spreeuwenpark in Noord until midnight from Thursday to Saturday.
Also in Noord, Open Coop at Tolhuisweg 2 serves daily from 09:00 to 19:00, and Gentle Place Coffee on Distelweg opens at 08:00 on weekdays.
OBA Oosterdok, the main branch of the public library, opened on 7 July 2007 in a building by Jo Coenen on the Oosterdokseiland, near Centraal Station.4 It has more than 1,000 seats and 490 internet computers, opens from 08:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 to 20:00 at weekends, and has a restaurant with a terrace on the seventh floor.5

Not everywhere. Signs reading "no laptops" or "no laptops on the weekends" have become increasingly common in Dutch cafés, and some owners have switched off the Wi-Fi or stopped sharing the password, because laptop users hold tables for hours. In a 2016 Radar poll, 61% of more than 600 respondents said laptop users in coffee bars didn't bother them. Ask the staff before you open yours.

Free listings are free for good. A featured page gives you photos, a menu and your own URL, in your café's own design, for less than a coffee a day.
