Aker Brygge, west of the center, was the Akers Mekaniske Verksted shipyard until it closed in 1982. The first phase of the shops, offices and flats built on the site was finished in 1986, and about 12 million people now visit each year.1 Tjuvholmen, the peninsula beyond it, has been rebuilt with some 1,200 apartments, galleries and the Astrup Fearnley Museum, with a Renzo Piano sculpture park and a bathing area at its tip.2

Bjørvika, on the east side, was a container port, and the E18 took up 1.8 km of its waterfront until the Bjørvika Tunnel opened in May 2010.3 The Opera House, the main public library and MUNCH now stand on the old port land, and the name Oslobukta, “Oslo Bay”, is used for the shops and restaurants at street level.34

Local tip: On a weekday evening, Kaffoteket serves until 22:00, and Deichman’s free study spaces upstairs stay open just as late.

Tjuvholmen and the west side

On Tjuvholmen, Kveitemjøl on Fjordalléen opens at 08:00 on weekdays and at 10:00 on Sunday, and Café de Concert is on Tjuvholmen allé. The name means “thief islet”: thieves were executed there in the 18th century, and post-glacial rebound later joined the islet to the shore.2

Babbo Collective and Bib roastery share Parkveien 80. Bib opens Wednesday to Sunday, 09:00–16:00, while Babbo stays open until just before midnight from Wednesday to Saturday.
