Gamlebyen is the oldest urban area within today’s Oslo. It had a town layout by around the year 1000, and this district alone was called Oslo until 1925, while the city as a whole was Kristiania.1 Ruins of its churches and royal estate lie in Middelalderparken, the Medieval Park, opened in 2000 on what was the southern part of the medieval town.2
East and north of it are Vålerenga, known for its small traditional wooden houses, and Kampen, whose ensemble of wooden houses VisitOSLO singles out.34 The cafés are neighborhood places, from Fuglen Gamlebyen on St. Halvards gate to Kampen Kaffe & Bar on Bøgata.
Local tip: Ride tram 13 or 19 up the Ekeberg Line for the view over the city and fjord, then come back down to St. Halvards gate for coffee.
Nothing matches those filters here. See all cafés in Oslo.
Trams 13 and 19 run on the Ekeberg Line, which climbs the hillside along the east side of the fjord south of Gamlebyen and ends at Ljabru.5 Ekebergparken, the sculpture park on the hill, has one of the best views of the city and the fjord, and the hill is where Munch found the setting for The Scream. Archaeological finds on Ekeberg go back several thousand years, the earliest signs of settlement in the Oslo area.4
St. Clement’s Church and its cemetery already stood here around the year 1000, and Snorri’s Heimskringla credits Harald Hardrada with founding the town in 1050. Medieval Oslo had its heyday in the 1300s, under Haakon V.1
Middelalderparken holds the ruins of St. Clement’s Church, St. Mary’s Church and the old royal estate, and nothing may be built there because ruins and cultural layers lie above and below ground. Its western edge meets the water roughly where the fjord met the town around 1300.2
Beyond the ruins, the neighborhood is a mix of listed 18th-century buildings in the core, 17th- and 18th-century wooden houses up toward the Ekeberg slope that are zoned for conservation, and four-story brick blocks from the end of the 1800s.1 Vålerenga is also home to the Vålerenga football and ice hockey clubs.3
