Grønland lies on the east side of the Akerselva, five to ten minutes’ walk from Oslo Central Station, and stretches from Grünerløkka down to the fjord at Middelalderparken. The streets Grønland and Grønlandsleiret follow the old shoreline, and the district became part of the city in 1859.1 Tøyen, to the northeast, is named after Tøyen Manor, whose main house of 1679 is one of Oslo’s oldest timber buildings.2
VisitOSLO sums up Grønland as pubs and modern bars, restaurants with food from all over the world, vegetable stalls with good-value produce and cheap fabric stores, and both neighborhoods have large immigrant populations.31 Coffee here runs from espresso bars on Brugata to plant-based cafés on Schweigaards gate and a café in the Botanical Garden.
Local tip: Handwerk Botaniske closes at 16:00, so plan a Botanical Garden walk with coffee for the morning or early afternoon.

Getting to Grønland and Tøyen
Grønland has its own metro station, and Tøyen has two stations: a metro stop with a shopping center above it, and a station on the Gjøvik railway line about 750 meters to the northeast. The Botanical Garden lies just north of the metro station.12 From Grønland, VisitOSLO suggests walking on to Tøyen for the garden or to Kampen for its wooden houses.3
Brugata
Brugata runs from Storgata to the Vaterland bridge, on the line between the Grünerløkka and Sentrum boroughs. After the bridge was built in 1654 it became part of Christiania’s main road in from the east and north, and farmers’ trading yards grew up along it; its western end is now mostly eateries, immigrant-run shops and the Gunerius shopping center.4
Three cafés stand almost side by side: Em oi! at Brugata 15, Evita Espressobar at 17A and Zenzi at 19. Zenzi keeps office hours, 09:00–16:00 on weekdays, while Em oi! stays open until 21:00 on Saturday.
Tøyen and the Botanical Garden
The University Botanical Garden goes back to 1814, when work began on the Tøyen estate that the king had given to the University of Christiania two years earlier.2 Handwerk Botaniske runs the café inside the old manor house, open all year, with a large outdoor terrace in spring, summer and autumn; the garden’s collections cover more than 5,500 plant species.5 The café opens daily 10:00–16:00.
Plant-based cafés
Håndbakt, at Kjølberggata 21, calls itself Norway’s first plant-based micro bakery. It bakes with coarse flour, sourdough and less sugar, is fully organic, and serves brunch by day and natural wine in the evening, with small concerts and markets in the back alley.6 Papegøye, at Urtegata 48, is entirely plant-based and pours specialty coffee as well as wine and cocktails, staying open until 23:00 Wednesday to Saturday.7 KUMI, on Schweigaards gate, serves vegan brunch daily 10:00–17:00.
Old rooms and late hours
Kafe Asylet, at Grønland 28, is in what VisitOSLO calls Oslo’s oldest wooden house, with a history going back to 1730; it lights the fireplace in winter and opens the backyard in summer.8 Klosterenga Café on Schweigaards gate opens at 07:15 on weekdays and stays open until 01:00 every night, the latest hours in Grønland and Tøyen.
