Spesialkaffe (specialty coffee) in Oslo usually means a light roast. Norð describes its house style as “lys, nordisk brennestil”, a light Nordic roast, and lets its roaster pick the season’s coffees for filter or espresso.1 Solberg & Hansen, which has traded coffee since 1879, buys directly from farmers and works out a separate roast profile for each coffee at its roastery at Ryen.2

The roasters range from that 19th-century firm to small operations. Lille Oslo Kaffebrenneri tastes new lots at its café on Mondays, a session known as cupping, and roasts on Tuesdays.3 Talormade, on Operagata in Bjørvika, roasts specialty coffee and runs a bakery in the same business.4

Local tip: Oslo’s specialty bars mostly close by 17:00 or 18:00, so plan your pour-overs for the morning and keep Fuglen for coffee after dark.

What to order and what it costs

In a July 2025 price check in central Oslo, a single espresso cost 32–39 kr and a cappuccino 45–62 kr at the five big chains, sitting in.5 At independent cafés in January 2026, a cappuccino cost 48 kr at Evviva on Københavngata and a double latte 65 kr at Håndbakt in Tøyen.6

Skip the decaf order: VisitOSLO, the tourist board, tells visitors that the artisan coffee bars are not the place to ask for it.7

Where the roasters cluster

Grünerløkka has the tightest group. Tim Wendelboe is on Grüners gate, Supreme Roastworks at Thorvald Meyers gate 18A, Lille Oslo at Markveien 58B and Solberg & Hansen at Vulkan 7, all within the district. Sentrum and Bjørvika come next, with Fuglen on Pilestredet, Lille Oslo Kaffebar on Youngs gate, Mad Drop on Ullevålsveien and Talormade on Operagata.

Further out, Mocca is at Niels Juels gate 70 in Briskeby, Røverkaffe is on Grefsenveien in Sagene, and Solberg & Hansen has a second address at Enebakkveien 125. Bib roastery, at Parkveien 80, opens Wednesday to Sunday, 09:00–16:00. East of the center, Fuglen pours in Gamlebyen too, at St. Halvards gate 31C, and that bar serves until midnight from Thursday to Saturday.

Opening hours

Specialty bars here keep daytime hours. Lille Oslo and Mocca open at 07:00 on weekdays, Tim Wendelboe at 08:30 and Supreme Roastworks at 10:00, and nearly all of them close between 15:00 and 18:00. Solberg & Hansen at Vulkan is an exception on weekdays, open until 20:00.

The two Fuglen cafés are the late option. Fuglen serves coffee and tea by day and turns into a cocktail bar in the evening, mixing classic and new drinks.8 The Pilestredet branch is open until 01:00 on Friday and Saturday, Fuglen Gamlebyen until midnight Thursday to Saturday.

Buying beans to take home

Several roasters sell beans by subscription. Lille Oslo Kaffebrenneri roasts and ships every week and asks subscribers what they like before choosing their coffee, with whole beans and ground coffee at the same price.3 Norð sells filter and espresso subscriptions grouped by region, from the Americas to Africa.1 Talormade sends boxes of beans to members at home.4
