Asunción dates from 15 August 1537, when Juan de Salazar de Espinosa founded a fort here on the Río Paraguay.1 The country roasts on a small scale. In 2021, the managing partner of Café Mayo said Paraguay had only two coffee manufacturers, Mayo and Belén,2 and Mayo has been on the market since 1966.3

Coffee is gaining ground fast. Paraguay imported about 1,400 tonnes in 2025, worth more than USD 13 million, an increase of 71.8% on the year before.4 Much of the café scene is recent. El Café de Acá opened in Villa Morra in 2009,6 Café Consulado opened in Centro at the end of 2015 and later helped create the roaster Totem Tostadores,5 and Typica, a Bolivian specialty café, set up in Asunción around December 2025.7
