Villa Morra was laid out on 6 February 1888 by Francisco Morra, an Italian from Cerignola who owned Asunción's tram company; he divided land near La Recoleta into 147 blocks.1 Today it is a 1.25 km² barrio bounded by Avenida España, San Martín, Mariscal López and Santísimo Sacramento, with homes, offices, restaurants and nightlife side by side.1
Recoleta, across Mariscal López, is named after the Franciscan Recoletos. After Dr. Francia suppressed the religious orders in 1824, their convent was later used as a cemetery.2 Cafés are spread across both, from El Café de Acá's Paraguayan breakfasts to God's Pan on Avenida República Argentina.
Local tip: Order an Aloha, sugarcane honey with lemon and ice, at El Café de Acá; one of its Villa Morra cafés opens at 06:30, before almost anywhere else in the area.4

Mariscal López and the first shopping mall
Avenida Mariscal López is the area's main road. Villamorra Shopping, on the avenue, presents itself as Paraguay's first shopping center; the company dates to February 1978, and in 2015 the mall had 92 shops and 18 places to eat in two food courts.3
The cafés sit on the side streets. La Galette Villa Morra, Café Mandala at Del Maestro 1260, Donca Donuts at Senador Pierce Long Huey 506 and Bosko Café & Coworking are all within a few blocks of each other. La Galette is a crêperie whose specialty is the galette, a savory buckwheat crêpe;7 this branch opens 07:00–21:00 on weekdays and 12:00–20:00 on Saturday.
El Café de Acá and the early openers
El Café de Acá opened in Villa Morra in 2009, on Teniente Héctor Vera near Francisco Mora, and added a second café in the Textilia complex in barrio Jara in July 2021.4 Its menu puts Paraguayan dishes such as empanada de mandioca (cassava) next to shakshuka and eggs Benedict, and it serves the Aloha, sugarcane honey shaken with lemon and plenty of ice.4 In October 2026 it took orders for branches in Carmelitas, Textilia, Paseo La Galería and Los Laureles.5
One of its Villa Morra cafés is open daily 06:30–23:00, the longest day in the area. God's Pan, at Avenida República Argentina 809, opens daily 07:00–21:00, and Chaval, at Cruz del Chaco 897, keeps shorter hours, 08:30–18:00 Monday to Saturday, with outdoor tables.
Wi-Fi, laptops and brunch
Bosko Café & Coworking, open 08:00–21:00 Monday to Saturday, is set up as a coworking café and has Wi-Fi and step-free access. Artesanos Café also has Wi-Fi and serves brunch, from 09:00 to 20:30 on weekdays and 08:30 to 21:00 at weekends. Café Mandala opens daily 10:00–20:00.
For a weekend brunch further south, La Gracia is at Olegario Víctor Andrade 2690. Chaval and Bosko close on Sunday, while God's Pan, Café Mandala and the 06:30 El Café de Acá open every day.
The Recoleta cemetery and church
The present Recoleta church was built under Carlos Antonio López, and the cemetery takes up a large part of the barrio.2 Former presidents Patricio Escobar, Juan Bautista Gill and Emilio Aceval are buried there, with Corina de la Irala Lynch, a daughter of Marshal Francisco Solano López, and José Evaristo Díaz, a hero of the War of the Triple Alliance.6
The cemetery also has evening visitors. A theatrical tour, Recoleta Viva, ran on 10 October 2026 in slots at 17:00, 18:00 and 19:00, with early tickets at ₲20,000 and the last slot sold out.6
