Asunción's evenings are the cooler half of a hot day, though not by much: January nights average a low of 23.1°C, and even in July the average low is 13.6°C.7 The afternoon break comes first. Paraguayans, like Argentines and Uruguayans, usually take their merienda, an afternoon snack, around 17:00: an infusion such as coffee or mate cocido with something baked, between lunch and supper.4

Cooltural in Carmelitas & Mburucuyá keeps the latest hours, until 02:00 on Saturdays, and Plezier in Centro runs to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Most of the others close between 21:00 and 23:00.

Local tip: Book a car before the last coffee arrives: Canada's travel advice warns against walking alone after dark, and ride-hailing apps operate in Paraguay.1

Where these cafés are: Centro (2), Carmelitas & Mburucuyá (2), Villa Morra & Recoleta (1), Las Mercedes (1).

Which cafés stay open latest

Cooltural, at Profesor Manuel Riquelme 1907, runs a split day: lunch 11:30–15:00 and evenings 17:00–23:45 on weekdays, then 17:00–02:00 on Saturday. It is smoke-free and closed on Sundays. Nearby on Julio Correa, Helados Doña Angela opens daily 09:00–23:00.

That ice cream counter belongs to Lácteos Doña Ángela, a dairy firm whose most-ordered flavor in 2023 was a dulce de leche (milk caramel) variety called guarapí; it then had nine shops of its own in Asunción.6

In Villa Morra & Recoleta, El Café de Acá is open 06:30–23:00 every day. Its menu leans Paraguayan, with lomito (a steak sandwich), empanada de mandioca (cassava empanada) and cocido quemado.5 For that last one, yerba mate and sugar are scorched together, by live embers or as a caramel, before hot water goes in.9 In Las Mercedes, El Cafetero closes at 22:00 seven days a week.

Downtown after dark

The historic center empties early. In January 2025 residents told ABC Color that the morning activity of government offices gives way in the afternoon to "una ciudad fantasma" (a ghost town), and that getting to a plaza is hard without a car.2 When TGI Fridays left Estrella and Alberdi in 2023, it cited three robberies in six weeks, falling sales and poor street lighting.8

Two downtown cafés stay open well past office hours. Café Consulado on O'Leary closes at 21:00 on weekdays and 22:00 at weekends, and has hosted shows by local and international bands.10 Plezier is open until 23:00 from Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Getting home safely

Canada's travel advice, updated in October 2026, lists higher crime in Asunción and in greater Asunción areas including Chacarita, Fernando de la Mora, Luque and San Lorenzo. It warns that muggings by armed motorcyclists happen day or night, and advises against walking alone after dark.1

Taxis are considered safe, though seat belts often don't work. They wait at marked stops, and the advice is to note the driver's name and license number from the ID card; ride-hailing apps also operate in Paraguay.1 After a late coffee in Carmelitas or Villa Morra, a car to the door is the simplest plan.

Weekend nights at street tables

The city has tried to keep its evenings outdoors. During the 2021 street-dining weekends, about 50 venues stayed open 10:00–23:59, clustered in the Microcentro, Carmelitas, Villa Morra and Recoleta, Las Mercedes and a few other barrios.3

Miguel Riego, the municipal director of the historic center, reported sales up almost 40% at participating venues. He said he had received no robbery complaints, but that the main improvement needed was more police presence.3
