Centro is where Asunción began. Juan de Salazar de Espinosa founded the fort on 15 August 1537, and one of the streets here, 15 de Agosto, carries the date.1 The Palacio de López, where the president has his office, stands behind the Costanera on the bay, and Calle Palma runs for eleven blocks through the microcentro.3

The coffee here is a mix of old names and newer specialty bars. Café Mayo, the Paraguayan brand on the market since 1966, is on Mariscal Estigarribia,7 Medialunas Calentitas and a Doña Chipa sell the city's breakfast pastries, and Café Consulado on O'Leary has served specialty coffee since 2015.5

Local tip: Go on a Saturday for the Feria Palmear on Calle Palma, then walk two blocks to Café Consulado on O'Leary, which opens at 10:00 at weekends.4

Calle Palma, the Panteón and the Casa de la Independencia

The Panteón Nacional de los Héroes stands between Palma and Chile. Work began in October 1863 on a chapel ordered by Francisco Solano López; the building stood unfinished through the War of the Triple Alliance and opened as the national pantheon on 12 October 1936.2 Carlos Antonio López, Francisco Solano López and José Félix Estigarribia are among those buried inside.2

A block from Palma, at Presidente Franco and 14 de Mayo, the Casa de la Independencia is the house where the patriots met before 14 May 1811; it has been a national museum since 14 May 1965.3 On Saturdays in 2025, the Feria Palmear closed four blocks of Palma, from Independencia Nacional to 14 de Mayo, to traffic from 11:00 to 23:00, with craft stalls, food and a stage at the 14 de Mayo corner.4

Specialty coffee on O'Leary

Café Consulado is on O'Leary between Palma and Presidente Franco, at the back of the Galería Santa Catalina. It opened at the end of 2015 with specialty espresso and filter coffee, and its partners later started the roaster Totem Tostadores with friends.5 It is open 09:00–21:00 on weekdays and 10:00–22:00 on Saturday and Sunday.

Within a few blocks are BarChef on 15 de Agosto, Cedro Libano on Chile and Il Capriccio on Montevideo. Doña Chipa has a shop south of the Panteón, and Ardiín Rotisería y Café, a rotisserie that also serves coffee, is on Doctor José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia.

Medialunas, Café Mayo and Kafa on Mariscal Estigarribia

Mariscal Estigarribia runs east out of the microcentro, and Medialunas Calentitas has a counter on it. The brand comes from Punta del Este, in Uruguay, and Oscar Zaputovich and Carla Caballero brought it to Paraguay about two decades ago. Its medialunas are made by hand and soaked in syrup, plain or filled with dulce de leche, guava or ham and cheese.6

Further east on the same street is Café Mayo, and a few steps from it Kafa tostadores, which Café Consulado's owner named in 2020 among the city's good specialty cafés.5 In 2023 Café Mayo's managing partner said the company planned to open its own cafeterías in Asunción.7

El Granel, Plezier and the hours of the center

On the eastern edge of Centro, El Granel at Juan de Salazar 372, between Artigas and San José, calls itself a neighborhood café with a large open-air space; it also rents rooms for workshops and events and runs a monthly cultural program.8 It opens 08:00–20:00 on weekdays and 08:00–19:00 on Saturday, and is closed on Sunday.

Plezier keeps the longest hours in the area: 08:30–23:00 Monday to Thursday, until 00:00 on Friday and Saturday, and 12:00–23:00 on Sunday. Plan around the heat. January averages a daily high of 34.0°C, and the city gets about 1,400 mm of rain a year, so summer walks along Palma work best early or after dark.1
