Asunción's weather sets the terms for any table outside. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with an average January high of 34.0°C, a July high of 21.9°C and relative humidity near 70% for most of the year.1 A short, mild dry season runs from May to September, the stretch when a terrace at midday is comfortable rather than an endurance test.1

Outdoor seating runs from garden patios east of the center to a few tables downtown. Carmelitas & Mburucuyá has the most, Villa Morra & Recoleta comes second, and Centro and Las Mercedes trail well behind. Several open by 07:30 or 08:00, early enough to beat the summer sun.

Local tip: From late July, look up as well as at the menu: the pink lapachos stay at their peak for about two weeks, and the yellow ones follow in September.2

Where these cafés are: Carmelitas & Mburucuyá (4), Villa Morra & Recoleta (3), Centro (1), Las Mercedes (1).

Heat, rain and raudales

Summer is long. Mean daily highs stay above 31°C from November through March, and the record of 43.0°C fell in October.1 January nights barely cool off, with an average low of 23.1°C, so an evening table outside is often kinder than lunch in the sun.1

Most rain falls in late spring and summer. November is the wettest month, averaging 195 mm, while July and August get 48.2 mm and 38.7 mm.1 Heavy storms turn some streets into raudales, torrents of runoff that can sweep cars along. In August 2025 the municipality named 11 intersections where they become dangerous, among them Avenida República Argentina at Caaguazú, and the advice was not to cross a flooded street even on foot.5

Lapacho season, late July to September

The dry months bring the lapachos. At the end of July 2026 pink lapacho trees, some close to fuchsia, were in full flower across Asunción along with a white variety, while the yellow lapacho was just starting; it usually peaks in September.2 The trees shed their leaves in autumn and winter and bloom after a veranillo, a short warm spell. Each display lasts about two weeks before the flowers fall.2

ABC Color's 2026 round-up pointed to pink trees at Teodoro S. Mongelós and 22 de Septiembre, beside the San Miguel Arcángel church, and at Fulgencio R. Moreno and Estados Unidos, with white ones at Haedo and 14 de Mayo by the Encarnación church.2 Popular belief holds that the bloom means the worst of the cold is over.2

Tables in the street

Sidewalk dining has a legal basis here. Ordinance 307/20 authorizes restaurants, bars and ice cream shops to put tables and chairs on streets and sidewalks.3 On the weekend of 8 and 9 May 2021, the "Asunción en las calles" plan closed more than a dozen stretches to traffic from 10:00 to 20:00, among them Palma between Nuestra Señora and Chile, and Senador Long between Teniente Vera and España.3

Café Consulado is a short walk from that stretch of Palma, on O'Leary between Palma and Presidente Franco, at the far end of the Galería Santa Catalina.8 It opens weekdays 09:00–21:00 and weekends 10:00–22:00.

Patios east of the center

In Carmelitas & Mburucuyá, Typica Café Paraguay at Agustín Pío Barrios 1333c opens Tuesday to Sunday 07:30–21:00. It is the Asunción branch of a Bolivian specialty brand with more than ten years in the trade; it opened around December 2025, and the company also runs a café in Florianópolis.7 Urbano at Papa Juan XXIII 1713 opens at 08:00 on weekdays and 09:00 at weekends, closing at 21:00.

Helados Doña Angela at Julio Correa 197 opens daily 09:00–23:00, the longest outdoor-table hours in the neighborhood, and LaPatiss is a few blocks away on Coronel Alcides Basualdo.

El Café de Acá has been in Villa Morra since about 2009, on Teniente Héctor Vera near Francisco Mora, and its menu runs to Paraguayan staples such as tereré and aloha, a drink of cane honey, lime and plenty of ice.6 Chaval at Cruz del Chaco 897 is a daytime stop, Monday to Saturday 08:30–18:00. In Las Mercedes, El Cafetero at Teniente Coronel Eugenio Ayala Velázquez 795 opens at 07:00 (08:00 on Sundays) and closes at 22:00.

Tereré at the table

Tereré, cold yerba mate shared among family and friends, is drunk in every season but comes into its own on very hot days.4 Custom calls for rupa first, something savory such as soup, empanadas or grilled meat, and the first serving is left to rest a few minutes, a habit linked to Santo Tomás.4

In 2026 the national tereré celebration brought an Expo Tereré to the Plaza de la Democracia from 28 February to 2 March.4 El Café de Acá serves tereré, so an outdoor table and a round don't require bringing your own thermos.6
