Kleparz grew around St. Florian's Church, which Bishop Gedko built in 1184. Casimir the Great gave it town rights in 1366 under the name Florencja; in the following century the name Kleparz (Latin Clepardia) had replaced it, and the Great Sejm merged it into Kraków in 1792.1 Fires swept it in 1476, 1528, 1655, 1657, 1755 and 1768.1 It has belonged to District I, Stare Miasto, since 1954, and was named a Historic Monument of Poland on 8 September 1994.1

Two squares sit side by side at its heart: Matejko Square, flanked by the Academy of Fine Arts and St. Florian's, and the Kleparz market square.1 North of them, cafés line Długa, Krowoderska and Warszawska, and a few open before 07:00.

Local tip: For the earliest coffee near Matejko Square, Lajkonik at Basztowa 15 opens at 06:00 on weekdays and Tociekawa on Długa at 06:30.
