An ogródek (literally “little garden”, plural ogródki) is the terrace a café or restaurant sets up outside its door. Kraków licenses them for two seasons, a summer season from 1 April to 31 October and a winter season from 1 November to 31 March, so a terrace can stay out past the warm months.1

Permits come from the city road authority, Zarząd Dróg Miasta Krakowa. A garden has to adjoin the façade of its café’s building and leave at least 1.5 m of footpath, and those inside the Old Town and Kazimierz–Stradom cultural parks follow extra rules set by the city council.1 Stare Miasto has the most cafés with outdoor tables, ahead of Piasek & Nowy Świat.

Local tip: In October, ask whether a terrace stays out: the summer ogródek season ends on 31 October, and a café needs a separate winter permit from 1 November.1
