A kawiarnia z wypiekami is a café that bakes, somewhere between a cukiernia (pastry shop) and a piekarnia (bread bakery). Kraków’s oldest baked good is sold from carts, though: the first record of the obwarzanek, a braided bread ring, dates from 1394, when court accounts put it on Queen Jadwiga’s table.2

Stare Miasto has the most bakery cafés, with Krowodrza close behind and the rest spread from Grzegórzki to Podgórze and Dębniki. Bun Bakery at Dolnych Młynów 3 is the earliest of them, opening at 06:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends.

Local tip: Look for the blue Protected Geographical Indication sticker on an obwarzanek stall: it marks a seller of the certified obwarzanek krakowski.1

The obwarzanek and its carts

For a long time obwarzanki were baked only in Lent; a bakers’ guild session on 8 January 1720 allowed them all year, but only on Fridays and fast days.2 They were sold from stalls on the Market Square, later from wicker baskets and then from mobile stalls.2 Only in 1849, probably, did every Kraków baker get permission to make them.1

On 30 October 2010 the European Commission entered the obwarzanek krakowski in the register of Protected Geographical Indications.1 The specification sets a diameter of 12–17 cm and a weight of 80–120 g, and in 2020 eight Kraków bakeries made the certified ring.1 As of February 2026 one cost 3.50–5.00 zł from the blue carts on the city’s street corners.3
