Stare Miasto is the medieval town inside the Planty, a 21-hectare chain of about thirty small gardens planted between 1822 and 1830 on the line of the demolished walls.1 At its center the Rynek Główny holds the Renaissance Cloth Hall, rebuilt in 1555, the free-standing Town Hall Tower and the Gothic towers of St. Mary's Basilica, from which the hejnał (bugle call) is played every hour.2

The Old Town, Wawel, Stradom and Kazimierz together make up the Historic Centre of Kraków, on the World Heritage list since 1978.3 For coffee this is the oldest ground in the city: a confectioner's of 1895 on Floriańska, a café in the Cloth Hall since 1912, and a cellar under Poland's oldest university building. Newer specialty bars sit on the side streets, and Świętego Tomasza keeps cafés open past midnight.

Local tip: Inside the Planty, Petit Delice on Świętego Jana opens at 07:00 every day; for a slice of sernik with your coffee, Jama Michalika on Floriańska lists it among its house cakes.11

Noworolski and the cafés of the Rynek

The Cloth Hall premises held a confectionery from 1880; Jan Noworolski bought it from the son of its previous owner and opened his café in 1912.4 Edward Dąbrowa-Dąbrowski redesigned the rooms: the White Hall has a frieze by Henryk Uziembło, and Weronika Noworolska painted the murals of the Mirror-Lilac Hall in a style close to Art Nouveau.4 A last hall was added during the Cloth Hall renovation of 1968–70.4

Around the square, UNA at Rynek Główny 36 opens daily 08:00–22:00 and puts tables outside, Cafe Szał at number 3 serves until 23:00, and Słodki Wentzl is at number 19.

Jama Michalika and the Green Balloon

Floriańska 45 is on the Royal Route, and Michalik's Cukiernia Lwowska drew professors and students from the Jagiellonian University and the Academy of Fine Arts.5 Art students ate free in exchange for small artworks.6 In 1905 August Kisielewski and fellow artists founded Zielony Balonik there, and its puppet shows lampooned bigotry and imperial censorship, some puppets modeled on well-known Cracovians.56

Karol Frycz and Kazimierz Sichulski designed the Young Poland interiors, including the green room, its small stage, the furniture, doors and frames, and Frycz made the stained glass.5 Michalik gave up the café during the interwar crisis; the building's owner took it over in 1991 at the city's request and restored it.5

University cafés: U Pęcherza and Pod Gruszką

Collegium Maius, on the corner of Jagiellońska and Świętej Anny, grew from a town house King Władysław Jagiełło gave the university in 1400; after fires in 1462 and 1492 the houses were joined around an arcaded courtyard.7 Its cellar café, U Pęcherza, has four rooms covering nearly 200 m², opens daily 09:00–18:00 and gives students and academic staff 30% off.8

Pod Gruszką, the journalists' club at Szczepańska 1, occupies a house built around 1300 and recorded in 1556 as Sub Pira, Under the Pear. Baltazar Fontana made the stucco of its main hall in 1693–1703, a café opened in the house in 1899, and Biblioteka Kraków, the city library, has run the club since 2017.9
