Zabłocie means "behind the mud". The name first appears in 1334, for royal forests, and the village became the eastern part of the town of Podgórze in 1784.1 From the 1890s it filled with industry: an ironworks, a soap factory, a vodka plant, a match factory, the Rekord enamelware works and, after 1946, the Telpod electronics plant, which ran until 2002.1

Revival began in the late 1990s. The Kotlarski bridge opened in 2001, the city named Zabłocie a strategic area in 2006, housing estates went up between 2013 and 2019, and the old Miraculum cosmetics factory became offices in 2018–2019.1 Cafés now sit along Lipowa, Przemysłowa, Romanowicza and the street called Zabłocie.

Local tip: Arriving by train at Kraków Zabłocie, take the Lipowa exit for Schindler's Factory and MOCAK; if you are early, kawa | Romanowicza opens at 07:00 every day.6
