Piasek, northwest of the Old Town, was first called Garbary after the tanners who settled there; the name Piasek (sand) took hold only in the 19th century, from the sandy site of the Carmelite church.1 Casimir the Great sold Kraków the court rights over the suburb in 1363, Karmelicka and Łobzowska were its main streets, and it kept its own town hall at Karmelicka 12.1
Piasek and its neighbors were declared a Historic Monument of Poland in 1994, and trams cross the district toward Bronowice.1 The cafés follow Karmelicka, Krupnicza and Dolnych Młynów, then thin out south toward Piłsudskiego and Smoleńsk.
Local tip: Bun Bakery at Dolnych Młynów 3 opens at 06:00 on weekdays, two hours before most cafés around it; Karma on Krupnicza follows at 07:00.

Karma opened on Krupnicza in 2010. Its founders started with a Synesso Cyncra machine and a first batch of Bright Note, an espresso blend from Union Hand Roasted, and by 2013 independent cafés all over the city were following their lead.2
The Krupnicza café cooks on site: cakes, including gluten-free and vegan ones, tarts, soups and mains, with a lunch menu that changes daily and bread from its own oven.3 It opens at 07:00 on weekdays and stays open until 21:00 Thursday to Saturday.
Dolnych Młynów links Czarnowiejska and Michałowskiego with Krupnicza, and at numbers 8–10 stands a former tobacco and cigar factory of 1872.4 Between the wars it was the State Cigar and Tobacco Products Factory. From summer 2016 the Tytano Foundation ran it as a quarter of bars, restaurants and concert halls, until it had to hand the site to its Spanish owner at the end of September 2020.5
The cafés are across the street at Dolnych Młynów 3. Bun Bakery opens at 06:00 on weekdays, Body Espresso Bar has outdoor tables and opens daily 08:00–20:00, and Café Lisboa, a pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart) shop, has a terrace too.6 Urban Coffee is next door at number 5.
Massolit Books & Café at Felicjanek 4 sells English-language books, with a focus on Polish, East European and Jewish literature, and serves coffee, pie and wine.7 Its American-style bakery is at Smoleńsk 17 and opens at 08:00 on weekdays.7
On Karmelicka, Kocia Kawiarnia Kociarnia (a cat café) at 12A opens daily 10:00–20:00, and Palarnia Kawy Ja-Wa is at number 17; palarnia kawy means coffee roastery. Green Caffè Nero has a branch at Karmelicka 16 and Lajkonik at number 22.
Amsel at Rajska 12 has outdoor tables and stays open until 22:00 Monday to Saturday, and Indalo Cafe on Tarłowska serves daily 08:00–22:00. Green Caffè Nero at Krupnicza 19a runs later still, 07:00–23:00. Toward Piłsudskiego, Przesada at number 5 and Petite France at 14B both have outdoor seating; Petite France is closed on Mondays.
Piasek's landmarks include Teatr Bagatela, designed in 1918–1919, the Capuchin church on Loretańska and a park named after the poet Wisława Szymborska.1
