Al Markhiya, Al Hazm and Duhail are residential districts in north Doha. Al Markhiya, one of the later-developed parts of the north, is named for the markh tree (Leptadenia pyrotechnica) that once grew there in abundance, had 5,197 residents in 2010, up from 1,419 in 1986.1 It has three awsaq al-furjan (neighborhood market complexes), and the Al Markhiya Sports Club has its headquarters and stadium off Al Markhiya Street.1

Two malls anchor the café scene. Al Hazm opened on 1 May 2017 on Al Markhiya Street, built from about 41,000 tons of marble and stone from Tuscany around a courtyard of olive trees 250 to 600 years old.3 Tawar Mall in Duhail, across from Dahl Al Hammam Park, was due to open in September 2017 with about 300 shops and restaurants and an indoor souq.4 Plans also included a musical fountain and Qatar's first trampoline park, with more than 100 linked trampolines.4

Local tip: In summer, take your coffee at Al Hazm: the mall is fully air-conditioned and has shaded outdoor areas around its centuries-old olive trees.
