Over 80% of Qatar's people live in Doha or its suburbs, and the city proper counted 1,186,023 residents in 2020, most of them foreign nationals.1 Its cups come from two traditions. Gahwa, the Gulf's Arabic coffee, is very lightly roasted, brewed with cardamom and often saffron, and on the Arabian Peninsula it almost always comes with dates.2 Karak and chapati, both Indian in origin, had become part of everyday Qatari food by the 1950s, according to the head of Aspire Katara Hospitality.3

Specialty coffee came later and now has its own addresses: the marina towers of Porto Arabia on The Pearl, the new streets of Msheireb Downtown beside Souq Waqif, and the northern districts. In February 2026 Flat White and Harvest Coffee became Qatar's first entries in The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops, and Harvest's 44th place is the highest a Qatari brand has reached.45

Moving between them got easier in 2019. The Doha Metro opened on 8 May that year, and its Red, Gold and Green lines now serve 37 stations over about 76 km.10

How gahwa, karak and coffee work in Doha

Gahwa is poured rather than ordered by size. The server fills a finjan, a small cup without a handle, from the dallah (coffee pot); take the cup and hand it back with your right hand, and expect the oldest or most important guest to be served first.2 Each pour is only a few sips, and refills keep coming until you signal that you have had enough.2

Karak comes sweet unless you ask for less sugar. Late-night karak runs from roadside takeaway windows and drive-through stops to traditional cafés in Souq Waqif and indoor 24-hour cafés; carry small cash for the kiosks, though most established cafés take cards.8 Thursday night and the Friday–Saturday weekend are the busiest times, and parking near popular windows fills up after midnight.8

During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight fasting hours, and check opening times, which change for the month.9 The fast is traditionally broken with dates and water before a larger meal, and many cafés and restaurants open after iftar and stay busy until suhoor, the meal before dawn.96

From January 2025 the metro ran 05:00–01:00 from Saturday to Thursday and 09:00–01:00 on Fridays, and a standard journey costs QR2 on a QR10 card.1110 The Pearl has no station of its own: ride the Red Line to Legtaifiya and change to a Metrolink feeder or a local electric bus.8
