Katara Cultural Village stands on reclaimed land on Doha's eastern coast, between West Bay and The Pearl, and soft-opened in October 2010 during the Doha Tribeca Film Festival.1 Its lanes hold a marble amphitheater that seats up to 5,000, the Katara Mosque, designed by the Turkish architect Zainab Fadil Oglu and faced in turquoise and purple mosaics, the gold-tiled Golden Mosque and a row of 15 m brick-and-clay pigeon towers.1 The amphitheater staged Verdi's Aida in October 2012.1

Cafés sit in three places: along Katara Street, inside 21 High St, and in two hotels: Biscotti is the Grand Hyatt's bakery café on West Bay Lagoon, and EllaMia is at the Mondrian. The village also has a stall of Chapati & Karak, whose operator, Aspire Katara Hospitality, already had a branch at Harrods in London by early 2014.2

Local tip: Take the Red Line to Katara station rather than driving, and save the outdoor tables at Joe's cafe on Katara Street for winter, when January highs average 22.6 °C.
