Souq Waqif's name means "the standing market": traders once stood at its gates to show their goods, and the market began at least a century ago beside Wadi Musheireb, a dry riverbed.1 Its lanes now sell traditional clothing, perfume and gold, and one section is kept for falcons, sold with landing pads and GPS trackers.1 The souq also keeps Bismillah, described as the first hotel to open in Qatar, in the early 1900s.1

Coffee here splits in two. Inside the souq it means tea, karak and Qatari breakfast in small cafeterias and tea rooms. West of it, in Msheireb Downtown Doha, the coffee is newer: Profiles by Roastado in the M7 building, Café Kitsuné in the Design District building, Toby's Estate on Abdullah Bin Thani Street and The Buttery Bakery in Msheireb Galleria.

Local tip: Come by metro rather than car: Souq Waqif and Msheireb stations are one Gold Line stop apart, and from January 2025 trains ran until 01:00 every night.
