와이파이 (Wi-Fi) in Busan is often free before you reach a café. The national public network had about 57,000 sites by the end of 2020, at bus stops, in parks and in more than 80% of traditional markets.1 Its open network is called Public WiFi Free; Public WiFi Secure asks for a username and password, and both are "wifi".1

The city adds its own. Since October 2019, Busan_WiFi has covered seven underground shopping arcades with 62 access points: Seomyeon Mall, Bujeon Mall, Jungang Mall, Nampo, Gwangbok, Gukje and the Busan Station arcade.2 Every city bus has carried free Wi-Fi since 2019, under network names that end in the route number, such as PublicWiFi@Bus_Free_1003.23 Among cafés, Jeonpo has the most with Wi-Fi, followed by Nampo-dong and Jungang-dong.

Local tip: Keep banking and logins for mobile data or a café's password-protected network: Busan advises against financial transactions over its free Busan_WiFi.2

Jeonpo-daero and Seomyeon

Seomyeon Station, the transfer between Lines 1 and 2, is one of the busiest stations in Korea.4 In Jeonpo, on the lanes off Jeonpo-daero, FM커피하우스 1호점 at Jeonpo-daero 199beon-gil 26 opens daily 10:00–22:00, 온나드로잉카페 is at Jeonpo-daero 209beon-gil 39-8, and 카페드에떼 at Jeonpo-daero 216beon-gil 13. Goyu Coffee (고유커피) opens only at 13:00 but stays until 23:00, Tuesday to Sunday.

For a connection between appointments, the Seomyeon Mall and Bujeon Mall arcades underneath the district are on Busan_WiFi.2

Nampo-dong and Jungang-dong

Good ol' days at Jungang-daero 41beon-gil 5 is a five-story hotel with its café and reception on the first two floors and rooms above; the name refers to the years when Jungang-dong was Busan's busiest street.5 The café is open daily 11:00–22:00.

Caffeinated at Baeksan-gil 20 opens earliest, at 07:30, and closes at 18:00. 티앤북스 남포점 is at BIFF-gwangjang-ro 20 in Nampo-dong, and the Nampo and Gwangbok underground arcades are both on Busan_WiFi.2

Gamcheon's hillside and the east coast

Gamcheon Culture Village climbs a steep slope in Saha-gu. It was first built in the 1920s and 1930s for workers moved away from the port, took in about 800 families in 1955, many of them followers of the Taegeukdo religion, and was repainted under a 2009 public art project; by 2015 it drew about 1.4 million visitors a year.6 Duf Coffee is at Gamnae 1-ro 195, and The Plate, which bills itself as a traditional British homemade café, opens daily 10:00–19:30 on Gamnae 2-ro.

On the Haeundae side, Horang2gelatteok in the Dalmaji-gil area opens 12:00–16:00 and again 17:30–21:30, and Tide Coffee Roasters, upstairs on Dalmaji-gil 62beon-gil, serves daily 09:00–19:00. In Yongho-dong, Haeparang Cafe opens 09:00–21:00 and takes cards.

Safer connections and cafés outside the center

Public networks are open by design. The city advises against entering sensitive personal information or making financial transactions over Busan_WiFi, and the National Information Society Agency's app shows nearby government, local and carrier hotspots and can test their speed.12

Vales (발레스) at Worldcup-daero 36-1 in Yeonsan-dong opens Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–21:00, and 계란조심 is at Yeonsu-ro 11beon-gil 46. Green Table (그린테이블) at Dangam-ro 11 keeps Monday to Saturday hours of 11:00–19:00, and near Kyungsung University, Home Story Cappuccino Cafe on Yongso-ro 28beon-gil has outdoor seats as well as Wi-Fi.

How do you connect to free public Wi-Fi in Busan?

In the underground arcades, including Seomyeon Mall, Nampo and Gwangbok, choose Busan_WiFi. Elsewhere, the national network appears as Public WiFi Free, or Public WiFi Secure with wifi as both username and password. On city buses, look for a network name ending in the route number, such as PublicWiFi@Bus_Free_1003.
