Haeundae Beach (해운대해수욕장) is about 1.46 km of sand, 40 m wide, open all year and visited by more than 10 million people a season; Dongbaekseom, at its western end, is a former island now joined to the mainland.1 Swimmers have gone into the January sea for the Polar Bear Festival every year since 1988.1

Most of the area's cafés are inland, on Haeridan-gil (해리단길), the lanes of U-dong behind Haeundae station. Cheap rents drew young owners there from around 2017, and when Weekly Kyunghyang visited in October 2018, shops were still opening and long-time merchants were already uneasy about rising rents.2

Local tip: Haeridan-gil starts on the far side of the old Haeundae station building: walk through it and over the disused track, and you are in the lanes of U-dong.2

From railway to café lanes

Trains stopped running on the Donghae Nambu Line past Haeundae in December 2013, and residents took over the disused track as a walking path.3 You reach Haeridan-gil by walking into the old Haeundae station building and crossing the former track.2 The Korail station once called Haeundae is now Sinhaeundae; the metro station of the same name, on Line 2, opened in August 2002 and is unrelated.4 That metro station is in U-dong, the same neighborhood as Haeridan-gil.42

Blueline Park on the old line

The 4.8 km of former track between Mipo and Songjeong became Haeundae Blueline Park, opened on 6 October 2020 under a 2013 agreement between the Korea Rail Network Authority and the city.5 It turned retired stations and track into a coastal route with views over Haeundae and Cheongsapo.5 The plan was contested: in 2016 a coalition of 28 civic groups opposed a scheme for a scenic train, rail bikes and a café street on what had become a free walking path.3
