Yeongdo (영도) is the island across the harbor from Nampo-dong, joined to it by two bridges.1 The older one, Yeongdo Bridge (영도대교), was completed in 1934 with a bascule span that could lift; it stopped working in 1966 and was restored on 27 November 2013.2 During the Korean War people went to the bridge to look for lost family and friends.2

The waterfront still works. Daepyeong-dong is called Kkangkkangi Village (깡깡이마을) after the ringing of hammers as women chipped rust off ship hulls, and Korea's shipbuilding industry began here under Japanese rule; today the yards mostly repair ships.3 Coffee moved into the same harbor: Momos Coffee opened its Yeongdo branch in 2021 in a converted shipping warehouse that looks onto the docks and its roasters.4

Local tip: In Huinnyeoul, start at the observatory and bus stop at the top of the village and walk down past the cliff cafés to the Jeoryeong Coastal Trail, rather than climbing up from the shore.6

Crossing to Yeongdo

Yeongdo Bridge normally lifts every Saturday at 14:00, but Busan Facilities Corporation suspended the event from 10 October 2026 after finding faults in the lifting gear. Cars and pedestrians still cross as usual, and the lift is to resume after inspection and repairs.5

Huinnyeoul Culture Village is about 20 minutes from the Lotte Department Store Gwangbok branch and the bus stop at the Yeongdo Bridge entrance.6 An observatory and a city bus stop sit at the top of the village, and you can walk down from there to the shore.6

Huinnyeoul Culture Village

Huinnyeoul means white rapids, for the foam where streams from Bongnaesan met the sea. The village began as a small fishing settlement on a cliff in Yeongseon-dong and became a crowded shantytown when Korean War refugees arrived; from 2010 residents and artists added murals and repaired homes.7 The white building at the entrance, a location for the film The Attorney (변호인), is now the information center, and the Jeoryeong Coastal Trail runs below.6

Cafés line the cliff path and the road above it: Yeoulmarq at Huinnyeoul-gil 97 and Lots at no. 289, and on Jeoryeong-ro (절영로) Having Moment at no. 196, Kunst204 at 204, Ridgeside (릿지사이드) at 208-1, The Aether Cafe at 234 and 흰여울비치 at 236. Tartelette (타르틀레트) at Jeoryeong-ro 193 opens daily 11:00–20:00.

Harbor roasters and converted buildings

Momos's Yeongdo branch has a signature drink, Momos Candy, and four core blends alongside seasonal and single-origin beans.4 A 2026 look at Busan's coffee trade named it with OGU Café and Abraham Coffee among Yeongdo's coffee businesses.8 OGU Roastery cafe is at Namhangseo-ro 52, with 암튼커피스탠드 a few doors away at no. 40 and 커피미미 on Namhang-ro.

In 2019 GQ Korea described Gemstone (젬스톤), built inside a former neighborhood swimming pool, where you go down into the drained pool for tea, and 손목서가, a bookstore café in a renovated house at Huinnyeoul-gil 307 with sea views from its second floor.9

Daepyeong-dong and the ship-repair yards

A large mural of a mother on an apartment wall in Kkangkkangi Village, titled "Mother of Us All", honors the women who worked on the hulls in winter to raise their children.3 Yang Tabang (양다방), at Daepyeong-ro 47-1, keeps the old tearoom name, and e.c.t. is at Daepyeongbuk-ro 29.
