Norrmalm sits at the heart of the inner city, and its southern part is what Stockholmers call City.1 The railway made it the center in the 1860s, and the Norrmalmsregleringen redevelopment, approved in 1945 and halted after the Almstriden protests of 1971, gave it Sergels torg, Hötorgscity and its modernist office blocks.1 Only about 8,650 people lived here in 2021.1 Visit Stockholm calls it by far the busiest district in town.5
Hamngatan, Drottninggatan and Regeringsgatan have the most cafés here. Kungsgatan, dug through the Brunkeberg esker and opened in 1911, runs from Kungsbron to Stureplan past Hötorget.2 Most cafés in the area close by 19:00 on a weekday, but a few stay open until midnight or later at weekends.
Local tip: Before an early train, Dagnys at Centralplan opens at 05:00 on weekdays; Vete-Katten's two counters in the north hall and upper hall of Centralstationen are the alternative.4

Ester Nordhammar founded Vete-Katten in 1928 as a konditori (pastry café), bakery and chocolate maker; the name is said to come from her answer when asked what to call it, "Det vete katten", an idiom for "who knows".3 It has been smoke-free from the start, and in 2012 it was sold to a group that included master confectioner Johan Sandelin, who had worked there since 1997.3
The main café at Kungsgatan 55 opens 07:30–20:00 on weekdays and 09:00–19:00 at weekends.4 Its Bakfickan shop is on Gamla Brogatan, another branch is in Hotel Continental at Vasagatan 22, and two counters work inside Centralstationen.4 Thelins, which has a café at Kungsgatan 49, charged 59 kr for a semla in the February 2026 survey.6
Drottninggatan was laid out in the 1630s and 1640s, renamed for Queen Christina, and runs about 1,500 m north from Riksbron; most of it is car-free.7 August Strindberg spent his last four years at No. 85, the Blå tornet building that is now the Strindberg Museum, and La Fleur Café & Bar shares the address.7
Kulturhuset Stories and Panorama are both at Sergels torg 7, and Kafé Plattan, on Beridarebanan beneath the square, stays open until 21:00 on Thursdays. House of Beans trades in the lower level of Hötorgshallen, the market hall on Hötorget.
NK Konditoriet and Franska caféet are at Hamngatan 18–20, and Coppola, Hamngatan Stories and Skafferiet share Hamngatan 37, the Gallerian mall.4 NK Art Bakery on Regeringsgatan opens at 07:30 on weekdays, and RC Café & Patisserie has counters at Kungsgatan 27 and Sveavägen 15–17, both from 07:00. Visit Stockholm points to the local chains Fabrique and Bröd & Salt here as well.5
Dagnys at Centralplan opens at 05:00 on weekdays, 06:00 on Saturdays and 07:00 on Sundays, and Metro Café on Sveavägen at 06:00 on weekdays. At night, Pas d'art on Biblioteksgatan and Italiano stay open until 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and Ragazzi on Olof Palmes gata until midnight. Metro Café serves until 21:30 every day.
