An uteservering (outdoor serving area) outside a Stockholm café sits on city land, and it needs a permit from the police.1 The city then bills for the space by area and by day: its own worked example, a 10 m² terrace in Vasastaden from 1 April to 15 October, comes to about 9,330 kr for the 198 days.1 That April-to-mid-October window is the summer season in the city's rules; the winter season runs from 16 October to 31 March.1

The light explains why owners pay. Day length in Stockholm runs from more than 18 hours around midsummer to about six in late December, and summer daytime highs average 20–25 °C.5 Södermalm has the largest share of cafés with outdoor tables, roughly one in four, followed by Kungsholmen and Vasastan.

Local tip: Garden cafés such as Rosendal close by 16:00 or 17:00; for an evening outdoors on Djurgården, Blå Porten on Djurgårdsvägen stays open until 21:00.

Where these cafés are: Södermalm (30), Vasastan (15), Kungsholmen (15), Norrmalm (9), Liljeholmen & Hägersten (8), Djurgården & Skeppsholmen (8), Gärdet & Norra Djurgården (7), Hammarby sjöstad & Sickla (7), Gamla stan (7), Östermalm (6), Johanneshov, Årsta & Hammarbyhöjden (4), Solna (2), Lidingö (1).

What the city's terrace rules mean at the table

Every uteservering needs a stable boundary such as a fence, with menu boards and flower pots kept inside it, and it has to be accessible.1 Raised floors need special permission, and a café may sell to passers-by from its terrace only if the permit allows it. Anyone planning to use bottled gas, for patio heaters for example, has to contact the regional fire service first.1

Two districts have stricter rules. In the Gamla stan city-environment zone, terraces may have no floors at all, and the furniture must be loose and easy to move so delivery vans and fire engines can get through.1 In the Söder zone around Nytorget, fences between 1 April and 15 October should be 0.9–1.1 m high, with up to 1.4 m allowed on the short sides and, in bad weather, all the way round.1

Summer streets and winter terraces

Each summer the city closes some streets to traffic as sommargågator (summer pedestrian streets), and cafés can apply to set tables out on them; the list changes from year to year, though many streets return.2 Gamla stan and Söder are the city's two stadsmiljözoner (city-environment zones), where space goes to walking routes, seating, play areas, greenery and terraces.2

Outdoor seating does not end in October. A café with a winter permit must clear snow and grit both its terrace and a two-meter strip around it, and on Söder streets that are not pedestrianized in winter, terraces on parking spaces need crash barriers and a ramp.1 Several cafés and restaurants keep their outdoor tables in service all year.4

Garden cafés on Djurgården and in Vinterviken

The quietest terraces are in parks. Rosendals Trädgårdskafé on Djurgården is a café and garden center whose pastries use organic and biodynamic ingredients, many grown in its own orchards.3 It opens daily 11:00–16:00. Café Ektorpet, a summer café beside the Waldemarsudde art museum, serves fika, lunch and waffles, and keeps 11:00–17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday.3

South of the center, Vintervikens Trädgård is an organic café next to the Vinterviken allotment gardens that stays open all year.3 It is at Vinterviksvägen 30, and Wintervikens café, at No. 60 on the same road, opens daily 11:00–16:00. Closer in, Kafé Himlavalvet at Drottninggatan 120 serves fika and lunch in the garden of the Stockholm Observatory.3

Sidewalk terraces by district

On Södermalm the terraces line a few streets. Swedenborgsgatan has Chic Konditori at No. 1, and Johan & Nyström and Emily's Café at No. 7; Hornsgatan has Tårtan at No. 32, Lilla Espresso Bar at No. 49 and Mahalo at No. 61. Tjärhovsgatan adds Beck at No. 1 and Greasy Spoon at No. 19. Johan & Nyström is the one that opens at 07:00 on Saturdays as well as weekdays.

Kungsholmen's waterside terraces include Cafe Eldkvarn at Norr Mälarstrand 1 and Mariedals trädgårdscafé at Hornsbergs Strand 14, and Café Fix is at Sankt Eriksgatan 35. On Djurgården, Blå Porten at Djurgårdsvägen 64 keeps the island's longest terrace hours, until 21:00 most days and 21:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Konsthallen Butik & Bageri on Allmänna Gränd opens daily 08:00–20:00.

FAQ

Outdoor seating in Stockholm: questions

When is outdoor seating season for cafés in Stockholm?

Stockholm's rules split the year into a summer season from 1 April to 15 October and a winter season from 16 October to 31 March. Cafés with a winter permit must clear snow and grit their terrace and a two-meter strip around it, and several keep outdoor tables in service all year.

Who gives cafés in Stockholm permission for an uteservering?

The police grant permits for an uteservering on public land in Stockholm, and the city charges for the space by area and by day. Its own example, a 10 m² terrace in Vasastaden from 1 April to 15 October, costs about 9,330 kr. Gamla stan and the streets around Nytorget have extra rules.

Where are garden cafés with outdoor seating in Stockholm?

Rosendals Trädgårdskafé on Djurgården bakes with organic and biodynamic ingredients, many from its own orchards, and opens 11:00–16:00. Café Ektorpet sits beside the Waldemarsudde museum, Vintervikens Trädgård is next to the Vinterviken allotments and open all year, and Kafé Himlavalvet serves in the Stockholm Observatory's garden.
