Östermalm was called Ladugårdslandet, roughly "the barn land", until 1885.1 Its first plan, from 1640, covered the streets around Östermalmstorg; the district later filled with broad east–west streets crossed by narrower north–south ones, broken only by the Narvavägen esplanade.1 About 36,700 people lived on its 245 hectares in 2021, and Strandvägen, Karlavägen, Narvavägen and Valhallavägen carry its most elegant buildings.1
For many Stockholmers the name means affluence and upscale shops, and its café scene has had a renaissance in the last couple of years.4 Sibyllegatan, Sturegatan and Karlavägen have the most cafés here: Stora Bageriet is at Sibyllegatan 2, Pascal Kaffebar at Sturegatan 8 and Tössebageriet at Karlavägen 77. Östermalmstorg and Karlaplan are on metro line 13, Stadion on line 14.8
