Vasastan, officially Vasastaden, is the inner-city district north of Tegnérgatan, bounded by Birger Jarlsgatan and Roslagsvägen to the east, Karlbergssjön to the west and Brunnsviken to the north.1 The name came into use in the 1890s, probably after Vasagatan, which opened in 1885.1 About 65,000 people lived here in 2021, and by average price per square meter it has been Sweden's most expensive district since the 2010s.1

Odengatan has the most cafés here, from Thelins at No. 34 to Ritorno at Nos. 80–82, followed by Torsgatan and Norrtullsgatan. Ritorno, a classic konditori (pastry café), has been around since 1959.4 On the west side, Rörstrandsgatan, which runs straight through Birkastan, and Sankt Eriksgatan hold the espresso bars, Mellqvist kaffebar and Kaffeverket among them.2

Local tip: Mellqvist kaffebar at Rörstrandsgatan 4 opens at 06:00 every day of the year; in summer, carry the cup up the car-free eastern end of the street.52

Odenplan and getting around

Odenplan is the district's hub: its metro station opened in 1952 and the commuter-rail station in 2017.3 Gustaf Vasa kyrka, an Italian neo-baroque church of 1906, stands on the square, and Odengatan carries on past Gunnar Asplund's Stadsbiblioteket (city library), opened in 1928 with a 24-meter rotunda.1 Café Pascal and Blåbär, close to the square, suit a coffee to go.4 Pascal, at Norrtullsgatan 4, opens at 07:00 every weekday.

Observatorielunden and the hills

Drottninggatan ends in the north at Observatorielunden.7 The park's old observatory was built in 1753 for the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to Carl Hårleman's design, and astronomy moved out to Saltsjöbaden in 1931; at 42 m, the hill is second only to Vanadislunden (43 m) in the district.1 Kafé Himlavalvet, at Drottninggatan 120, opens at 11:00 every day, and Third Place on Rödabergsgatan serves 09:00–21:00 daily.
