Södermalm, Söder to Stockholmers, covers a 5.71 km² island on the south side of the city center and was mostly rural until the early 1600s.1 Once the city's slum, it became known for bohemian and alternative culture, and gentrification has since made its flats expensive.1 It divides into Högalid in the west, Maria Magdalena around Mariatorget and Slussen, Katarina-Sofia around Nytorget and Mosebacke, and Åsö around Medborgarplatsen and Skanstull.1

Götgatan, Hornsgatan and Ringvägen have the most cafés here, followed by Katarina Bangata. The range runs from Drop Coffee's light roasts to konditorier such as Åsö konditori & bageri on Åsögatan, open from 07:00 on weekdays, and Chic Konditori at Swedenborgsgatan 1. Most close by 18:00 on a weekday.

Local tip: Start with a hand-brewed filter at Drop Coffee on Wollmar Yxkullsgatan, then cross Mariatorget to Sankt Pauls bageri at Sankt Paulsgatan 24 for the pastry.35
