Tainan (臺南) is the oldest city on Taiwan and spent 263 years as its capital.1 The Dutch East India Company put up a small fort at Anping in 1624 that grew into Fort Zeelandia, Koxinga's army took it in February 1662, and Tainan stayed the seat of Qing-era Taiwan Prefecture until the 1880s.1 The special municipality had 1,856,642 people in March 2023.1 Its busiest café streets are in West Central District, around the Confucius Temple and the old harbor lanes.
The city likes things sweet. Tainan was a center of sugar production, and its cooking runs sweeter than elsewhere in Taiwan, down to eel noodle soup served sweet and sour.1 Hanlin Tea House (翰林茶館) in Tainan is one of two businesses that claim to have invented pearl milk tea (珍珠奶茶, zhēnzhū nǎichá).2 Café menus borrow from the local orchards: StableNice, in Lane 83 of Nanning Street, tops an americano with milk foam and the juice of Yujing (玉井) mangoes.3
The railway splits the café map in two. West of the tracks lie the old city, the Five Channels lanes and, at the end of the canal, Anping; east of them, National Cheng Kung University and its student streets. Trains through the center moved into a tunnel on 17 October 2026, the first phase of an underground railway due for completion in March 2031.4
West Central District holds the old city, from Chihkan Tower and the Confucius Temple to the Five Channels (五條港), the river ports that made it Tainan's commercial center in the Qing era.13 Anping lies at the far end of the canal, which has linked downtown with Anping Harbor since April 1926.14

On a menu, look for 手沖 (shǒuchōng, pour-over), 冰滴 (bīngdī, cold drip) and 自家烘焙 (zìjiā hōngbèi, roasted on the premises); 橘舍自家烘焙手沖咖啡 on Zhongzheng Road puts two of them in its name. 喫茶 (kissa), borrowed from Japanese, marks a tea or coffee room, as at 雀色喫茶 in Yongle Market. At the city's 2024 coffee auction, a cupper from Liujia demonstrated siphon brewing (虹吸, hóngxī), which the city's report described as rare today and distinctive to Tainan.6
Many independent cafés set a 低消 (dīxiāo, minimum spend). At Akatsuki in Lane 84 of Zhongyi Road it is one drink per person, and desserts don't count toward it.7 Opening days can be few: 杏源珈琲 on Fuqian Road opens Thursday to Sunday only, and 衛屋茶事 off Fubei Street closes on Wednesdays.8 Tipping is not practiced in Taiwan; full-service restaurants add 10% instead, and traditional tea houses may charge a tea-water fee for brewing and snacks.9
Tainan has no metro yet: its planned Green Line was still at the planning stage in September 2026.10 Every inner-city bus route passes Tainan railway station, and local trains from there reach the high-speed rail at Shalun in about 20 minutes.24 Save the terrace for winter: December averages 15.6 mm of rain against 478.9 mm in August, and July highs average 33.1 °C.1

No. Tipping is generally not practiced in Taiwan, so you pay the menu price at Tainan cafés, and full-service restaurants add a 10% service charge instead. Traditional tea houses may add a tea-water fee for brewing the tea and serving snacks. Some cafés set a minimum spend instead, such as one drink per person.
低消 (dīxiāo) means a minimum spend. At Tainan cafés that set one, it is often a drink per person: Akatsuki, a late-night café and roasting studio in Lane 84 of Zhongyi Road, asks each guest for at least one drink and does not count desserts toward the minimum.
By bus, train or on foot. Tainan's metro Green Line was still at the planning stage in September 2026. Every inner-city bus route passes Tainan railway station, local trains from there reach the high-speed rail station at Shalun in about 20 minutes, and trains through the center have run underground since 17 October 2026.
Winter, when Tainan is mild and dry. December averages 15.6 mm of rain, against 478.9 mm in August, the wettest month. Summer afternoons are hot, with average July highs of 33.1 °C, so the dry months around December suit a terrace or courtyard best.
