Anping (安平) began as Tayouan, a sandbar where the Dutch East India Company set up its headquarters after 1624 and built Fort Zeelandia; silt later joined it to the mainland, and Han settlers named it after the Anping Bridge in Quanzhou.1 The district covers 11.07 km² and had 68,465 people in March 2023.1

Tainan's tourism office calls Yanping Street (延平街), Anping Old Street, the first street in Taiwan to be given a name. The Dutch built it narrow, for walkers and push carts, and sword lions (劍獅) on door lintels guard the alleys around it.2 Cafés gather on Anping Road, Gubao Street and Yanping Street in the old village, and on Wenping Road and Anbei Road in the newer grid.

Local tip: Buy the Tree House ticket first and have coffee inside the site; Tainan residents with ID enter free, everyone else pays NT$70.8

Getting to Anping

The canal is the old way in. The current one was dug from 1922 and opened on 15 April 1926; it runs about 3.78 km and links downtown with Anping Harbor.3 By bus, all of Tainan's inner-city routes pass through the railway station, and the weekend tourist routes 88 and 99 run about hourly, roughly 09:00–18:00.4

Beefcake Coffee Roasters (猛男咖啡) has its second shop at Anping Road 42, beside the canal; the first opened near NCKU.5 It roasts its own beans, displays its coffee awards and, in January 2024, opened 10:00–18:00 on weekdays and from 09:30 at weekends, closed on Wednesdays.5

Fort Zeelandia and the Tree House

The Dutch completed Fort Zeelandia in 1634, and Koxinga took it in 1662.6 What remains from the Dutch period is mainly a brick wall south of the gate, overgrown with banyan roots; the white walls and pointed observation tower date from repairs in 1975.6

Tait & Co. used the Anping Tree House as a warehouse for sugar and camphor, the Japan Salt Company took it over in 1911, and the city opened it to visitors in 2004.7 Banyan roots now cover its walls, and the site has a coffee shop; it opens 08:30–17:30, with tickets at NT$70 and free entry for Tainan residents with ID.8 On Gubao Street outside, 樹屋咖啡館 at No. 108 opens 10:00–17:00, Stay Cafe is at No. 66 and 白熊咖啡 at No. 109.

Yanping Street and the old-street lanes

Wenping Road, Anbei Road and the new grid

East of the old village, the newer streets have their own roasters. Scavo Coffee Roasting is at Pingfeng Road 132, 造 Coffee Roastery at Jiankang 2nd Street 72-1 and 上島MUC Coffee Roasters on the ground floor of 森行旅 at Anbei Road 98.
