This is the old walled city's center. Chihkan Tower (赤崁樓) stands where the Dutch built Fort Provintia in 1653, at Sakam, about 3.2 km east of Anping; the fort fell to Koxinga in 1662, and the Qing rebuilt the site in the 19th century.1 Inside the grounds are Haisheng Temple and Wenchang Pavilion; the site opens daily 08:30–21:30, with a full ticket at NT$70 when the city's tourism office last updated its listing in 2024.2

The Confucius Temple (孔廟) on Nanmen Road dates from 1665, when Zheng Jing approved it, and it is known as 全臺首學, the First Academy of Taiwan.3 The grounds open 08:30–17:30 and close on New Year's Eve; on 28 September a ceremony marks Confucius's birthday.4 Between the two landmarks, cafés fill the lanes of Kaishan Road, Weimin Street, Fuqian Road and Minquan Road, and the upper floors of Zhongyi Road.

Local tip: After coffee on Hayashi's fifth floor, go up to the sixth: the shrine and the observation deck are part of the store, which charges no admission.1016
