Shennong Street (神農街) was Beishi Street (北勢街) in the Qing era, a merchant street between two of the Five Channels, the river ports that linked the city to the Taijiang inner sea.12 Its two-story shophouses are narrow at the front and long behind, with an upper door: goods were hoisted by rope to the second floor, and a stone block at each doorway helped with the loading.1
In 1823 a storm turned the Zengwen River into the Taijiang, the inner sea filled with silt, and the street's trade went with it.1 Tainan's tourism office now calls Shennong Street a center for young artists and handmade goods, and asks visitors to follow each shop's rules, since some ban photography.3 Around it, cafés run along Hai'an Road, Guohua Street, Zhengxing Street and Xinyi Street.
Local tip: On a Wednesday evening, walk about 15 minutes from Shennong Street to Wusheng Night Market, which opened in 1984 and is the oldest of Tainan's big night markets still running.7

Hai'an Road (海安路) runs about 3.7 km; its first section reaches from Yonghua Road to Zhongzheng Road, the second on to Chenggong Road.4 In 1992 the city planned to move the shops along it into an underground mall, work began in mid-1993, and the mall did not fully open until the end of 2002.4 A surface makeover followed in 2017 and 2018, and on 18 August 2018 eleven ventilation towers, 5–6 m tall, opened as a street art gallery between Fuqian Road and Minzu Road.4
