North District (北區) had 126,229 people in January 2023 and holds Tainan Park, the Tainan Cultural and Creative Park and the Flower (Garden) Night Market.1 Its oldest landmark, Kaiyuan Temple (開元寺), began as Beiyuan Villa, a residence Zheng Jing built for his mother and himself after leaving politics in 1680; Qing officials turned it into a Buddhist temple in 1690.2

Cafés here sit on long residential streets rather than in one old quarter. Kaiyuan Road, Changrong Road and Hai'an Road Section 3 have the longest runs, Nanyuan and Beiyuan streets the quieter ones, and the tea rooms gather in the lanes off Fubei Street.

Local tip: Most seats at 衛屋茶事 are on tatami, so wear shoes that slip off easily, and don't plan on a Wednesday, when it is closed.4
