National Cheng Kung University (成大, NCKU) was founded in January 1931 as Tainan Technical College and sits immediately east of Tainan railway station; in 2025 it had 11,853 undergraduates and 8,701 graduate students.1 The station's rear exit, built in June 1977 for East District residents and students, opens toward the campus.2

Much of the Kuang-Fu campus was the barracks of the Japanese army's 2nd Taiwan Infantry Regiment, and three barracks from 1912 survive as a national monument.1 In the Banyan Garden, the largest tree was planted in 1923 by the Japanese crown prince, Hirohito.1 Around the campus, cafés line Dongning Road, Changrong Road, Shengli Road, Daxue Road and Yule Street.

Local tip: Time a weekend coffee on Yule Street with a visit to the Xizhuwei hill and the old prefect's residence, which open only from Friday to Sunday, 11:00–18:00.3

Coffee chains in NCKU & Dongning Road

Yule Street and the Xizhuwei hill

At Lane 197 of Yule Street (育樂街), the 西竹圍之丘 creative park reuses staff dormitories of Tainan First Senior High School and includes the city monument of the former Tainan Prefect's Residence, built between 1898 and 1906 as a Western house and a Japanese house side by side.3 The mayor now receives guests there, and it opens free to the public Friday to Sunday, 11:00–18:00.3

On the street itself, 圍讀珈琲 at No. 201-3 has Wi-Fi and air conditioning and closes on Thursdays, with 有時甘杯 next door at No. 201-4. 北南山自家烘焙咖啡坊 roasts at No. 193, 一心二葉 生活喫茶家 is at No. 99 and 珈琲人間 at No. 6.

Shengli Road and Daxue Road

Shengli Road (勝利路) has I'm Coffee at No. 118, which had no time limit and opened 08:00–18:00 in 2024.4 In its lanes, 波斯納書店咖啡館 (Posner) is a bookshop café in Lane 171, and 橋上看書 is in Lane 52.

白兔美術社 is upstairs at No. 83, Chador咖啡茶朵 at No. 115-1, 客憩Cafe at No. 49 and 勝曼精品咖啡 at No. 54-2. On Daxue Road, Yun Ping Coffee is in the Phoenix Theater at No. 1, and KAFFE at HOME and 植也咖啡 are in Lanes 22 and 18.

Dongning Road and Changrong Road

Dongning Road (東寧路) is the long one. 9 Cheers Café and Bar on the western section, at No. 22, serves brunch, takes cards and has Wi-Fi and outdoor tables. In Lane 15, NOTHING but coffee fills a corner old house with bare concrete and wooden furniture, and two Shiba Inus wander between the tables.5 Green Wood is in Lane 120, 禪坊豆趣 in Lane 134 and Haruko Cafe in Lane 510.

On Changrong Road, For You Espresso (為你·煮咖啡) in Lane 66 of Section 3 sells drip bags and roasts beans to order; in 2024 it opened 11:00–19:00, closed Mondays, with no time limit.4 Birdeye Espresso is in Lane 24 of Section 2, and MOGU KABI, 賦予咖啡 and 島內移民 are on Section 3.

Late nights and early mornings near campus

Two of the city's latest closers are here. 曼頓咖啡 at Xiaodong Road 151 opens 09:00–02:00 every day, and 老房子 runs until 02:00 as well, opening at 14:00 from Tuesday to Sunday and at 19:00 on Mondays. July 8th Cafe, in Lane 86 of Yidong Road, had a shop cat and stayed open until 23:00 in 2024.4

Phoenix Box Cafe (鳳盒子) at Minzu Road Section 1, No. 15 is the roomy option, with a high ceiling and space for hire for talks and meetings.4 For an early start, 方糖咖啡茶品複合店 on Fulian Road opens at 06:30, and The Shop on Daxue Road West at 08:00.
